Help!

Bought my series 2a on Friday , drove her home 260 miles without issue. Not even had chance to put photos on here. Today went to come back the 6 miles from showing her off to a mate and the noise from the gear box is horrendous. I can select 1/2/3/4/r in high and low range and she will move. I can select over drive and she will move. If I push the clutch in the noise stops, let it out and the grinding noise starts again. Not driven her since as I don't want to do any damage. I was warned that she pops out of gear on the over run (don't know if this is connected) - I was hoping this was just a weak spring (pretty sure it was the bolt on the main shaft as there was no movement on the gear stick in fourth)

What could it be and what should I be looking at?

Any help most welcome!

Thanks..... :(

Up date - just taken the inspection plate off the top of the transfer box (plenty of oil - no missing teeth) and noticed that the hand break drum is jerking in time to the grinding so the problem is there - hoping it's just knocked out of alignment or not in marrying up.

James - "brgs" - sorry don't follow you! (thanks)

bearings ,if noise happens with engine running stood still but goes away if clutch pedal pressed gearbox bearings ,output bearings on t/box would be noisy all the time vehicle moving

Arse - not something I could do my-self. I hope it's not too expensive....

Time to find an independent land rover guy or small garage near Tunbridge Wells...

you can check nut on mainshaft through cover on passenger side top on transfer box castlelated nut with tab washer they often come loose ,they do give symptoms of jumping out of gear on overrun ,but not normally grinding noises, jumping out of gear is because of 2 things worn dog teeth on gears and selector hubs and too much endfloat between gears, usually both due to age,you would be better off having gearbox reconditioned and at least t/box looked at

Not this - tight as a drum...

Taken her to a local dealer - will know more on Tuesday..

Fingers crossed it's the overdrive as he suspected. If it's gone it will be time to see how good the dealer's reputation is....

Yep -second gear is quiet for some reason. Hope it is the overdrive as I can get rid of it! Will def be asking for a bit of cash back..

Plan was to replace seats , replace suspension then save up for recon gearbox and new clutch......

is it noisy stood stiil in neutral or only when moving, when buying an old truck i allways check condition of body work .trim ,chassis etc as gear boxes, axles etc are easier to fix than trying to put right bodged bodywork

All bets are off - the list of whats ****ed is too long and painful to remember - boils down to "gear box ****ed".......

Arse - don't know what to do now!

well you could start by trying to narrow faults down then decide on best way of fixing, if you give symptoms and try whats asked then more info could be given, i may be able to save you money .

Heres the best description I can give.

Started to drive home on Subnday - went up through the gears. No abnormal noise. When in fourth grinding noise started. Pulled over asap. Took her out of gear - still noise. Push clutch in - noise stopped. Selected Low range and then high range again in case this wasn't engaged. No difference to noise. Selected FWD in HR let clutch out again. no difference in noise. Went HR to LR and back to HR to deselect FWD. No difference in noise. Selected OD - again no difference in noise - put OD in netural - no difference. Popped off the inspection plate on transfer box and OD - both had nice clean oil showing.

I can select all four forward gears and reverse. once she is moving noise starts in all gears apart from second.

Looked at hand break drum and it's juddering in time with the grinding noise.

I got her relayed home and then over to the Thatched Garage. Got a phone call this morning after the workshop team has looked at saying either the layshaft has gone or there was water in the box at some point and 1/3/4/r are all buggered.

I spoke to the dealer who said it may be a bearing thats gone - I am inclinded to take the workshops view as a) they have a good reputation and b) they have seen it.

Can't think of anything else....

Many thanks!

Body work in good order - will need to do the rear springs at some point but it's a job I was expecting and am looking forward to doing!
