Hi,

I have just picked up 'Layla' my new old series III. It has the usual things to rectify but I would like some opinions on the following.

There are a couple of spots which may or may not need attention. The following pics depict a spots of rust

1. on the drivers side top of the door post.
2. at the bottom of the door post.
3. inside the drivers door where the top hinge bolts to the bulkhead.
4. passenger side top of door post.
5. passenger foot well.

I'm no welder or MOT'er or even a trained mechanic.

The best was to describe it is that 1 2 3 & 4 are all solid when I poke / knock them they may have been possibly treated already. But I would like opinions please on whether they need attention now...if so what can be done to sort it ie patches or new panels etc. and if people have had this kind of work done how much it cost them.

The drivers side looks like it needs a sorting, I beleive you can get repair sections, or you could make up the shapes with pieces of tin, its a job for an experienced enthusiast though.
 
Make up the pieces out of tin? I take it you don't mean Tesco's tinned tomatoes! :) Would that then be welded on top of what is there already or placed inside somehow? Sorry if ti seems a stupid question.

I more electrical then body things! :)
 
the bottom of that door post is most likely an mot fail point, just below that rot is the lower bulkhead mounting/A-post foot....

the foot can be bought independantly...

when the bulkhead was first built the foot was inserted up inside the A-post and spot welded in solidly most likely with a dozen randomly placed "spots", the easiest way to find them is with a twisted wire "cup mop" on an angle grinder to strip all paint and rust from the remaining metal you then drill thru the spots removing them completely and then if you're lucky with a bit of effort the remainder of the foot will drop out of the bottom of the A-post...

slide the new foot up in it's place and bolt back to the outrigger and puddle weld thru the drill holes ...

this is all assuming that the rest of the A-post doesn't fall to pieces as you try to get the old foot out, which would then require (part) replacement as well, A-posts can be bought but i've not had to replace one yet (my time will come)

that bulkhead is starting to rot quite nicely around the checkstrap, it's not as bad as mine, my checkstrap mount has been welded back in very poorly and is now ripping out again and my nearside A-post has loads of corrosion in it expanding the metal layers , my bulkhead is almost beyond salvageable as it's been patched in so many places so i'll eventually just replace it with a cheap one that i can rebuild/repair myself (i'll be looking for one that hasn't gone too far when i eventually do it)

sadly it does look like it's that nice paint that's holding your bulkhead together - however there's plenty of life left in it yet as there's a wide range of repair panels available for it - but to do a proper job the entire assembly should be removed (that isn't a lazy Sunday afternoons task) but with a £100 mig and some practice all will be well again

mine looked in similar condition to your's until i removed it to find it was 50% rust - but it was still repairable

No no no no, not tesco tomatoes, marks and spencer specialty cheese biscuits.

On a lighter note, you could scrounge a few bits of 1.5mm steel from a sheet steelworkers, have a look in the yellow pages, if your tight like me then another way to get good donor steel is take a hacksaw to a breakers yard and saw the roof off a car, loads of flat unrusty steel to patch things up with.
 
Thanks guys Ill look at getting it sorted then. Just got to find someone to do it for some magic beans! :)
