It's just that my mate is besotted with Discos, and he's seen a lovely TD5, I'm not that familiar myself with Discos but was wondering if he should stick with the TDI version or not. Purely from a maintenance , running cost, build quality etc point of view.

i prefere the the td5 over my 200tdi i used to have but servicing is a lot dearer but then it needs it less often so its swings and roundabouts i suppose!:( Td5 is definatly thirstier!

Leaky s/roof is the prob' I've had. Been back 3 times and still leaking. AAAARGH. Never owned a Tdi though, so couldn't comment on any pros / cons.

Well I owned a 200 series Tdi Discovery for 7yrs and liked it a lot, it had the usual problems as any vehicle, only broke down once and that was when the clutch went. Apart from that it was v. good. Now I have a 2002 td5 es and I love it, it is so much more refined, the engine is smooth and the whole driving experience is great. Having said that it has been back to dealers to stop water ingress in passenger footwell which was air con drains blocked, new starter motor. and new air con pipe, but the vehicle is superb. I would definitely be wary of buying private, as if I had it would have cost me quite a lot to have repairs done, thats why I bought from a dealer and got a warranty, which is great and then after the year is up you should have only the usual maintenance to carry out. :p

depends on how much he wants to spend - anything over 6K should get him an early TD5 - anything less & he could get a late Tdi

plus point for a TD5 are better styling / more modern interior / better equipped / more comfortable / better engine

only minus point for a TD5 really is much more electronics to go wrong - but you get this with most modern cars - best to get one with warranty or buy aftermarket warranty.

like discoman said the TD5 ES (what I've got) is REALLY nice.

no experience of TDi so can't comment

is your mate in Burton ? - where's the one he's seen ? - if he doesn't know much about them I'd be happy to go & look with him to give him a few pointers or he's welcome to look at mine.

I think the build quality is better on a TD5, maintenance is prob similar (apart from the electronics) I would say the running costs are better on a Td5 - just worked out mine on last 1300 miles - 33mpg

personally I would go for the TD5 - as a rough guide mine is a 2001 TD5 es, 90K , FSH & I paid £8500

This is said vehicle and yes he lives in Burton , thanks for the offers I'll put it to him.
USED LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2.5 Td5 GS 7 seat, Derby, Derbyshire

small world - I looked at a couple at shardlow 4x4 when I was looking for mine - they were recommended to me by someone who had a 90 off them - but they only had older ones (P & S reg ones for 4-5K) when i was looking.

that looks a nice one - price looks good, not too many miles FSH , manual as well - you get about 5mpg more in a manual than an auto - might have bought that myself if they'd had it when i was looking. ;)

PM me his mobile if he wants any help - can be a good bargaining point if he turns up with somebody else in a disco - shows they know what they're lookin at

might be worth him checking this place as well - only 30mins down the A38/A5 in cannock - I looked there as well - they tend to be a bit dearer though cos they have lower mileage models & have a large premises right on the main A5

I've had 2 300 Tdi's - the last one an ES with full leather , air con etc .
I found them easy to work on and gave a good mpg - usually 33/34 mpg.
They were both 7 seaters as they serve as the family taxi .
I was curious about the Td5 for some time back but like many felt the electronics etc could lead to expensive problems .
Last month however I bought an 01 Td5 7 seater with 160K on the clock .When I drove it ( the first time I had driven a Td5 ) I was very impressed - the engine is very smooth compared to the Tdi and also I found acceleration much better. It has rear air suspension - as have all 7 seaters - and while the mileage is high it has been well maintained . It was owned by a sales manager and serviced regularly .
I certainly wouldn't go back to Tdi and all the family agree - plus the 2 rear seats face forward and have 3 point seatbelts . Mine is the same colour etc as the one in your ad and going by the description a very desirable Disco .
I was considering purchasing one in England and importing it to Ireland but the rip off rate of VRT being charged here put paid to that idea - the VRT on an 01 Disco averages about €5000 (£3500) .

thats a lot of miles - just shows the TD5 engine should last - do you know if it's had anything done to it other than normal servicing ?

at least mine should be ok for another 70K :)

Thanks to everybody who kindly donated their experiences on this thread . I go away the better for the knowledge you have all imparted.

Thanks also must go to burtonboy, I offered your services to my mate and he was quite taken aback, he really couldn't believe that a total stranger would offer to help in such a way. But I feel that possibly the majority of the members on this site are all of the same mind.( it's like some sort of brotherhood). Never the less he thanks you very much for the offer but on this occasion would rather go his own way. Thanks again burtonboy.

A Land Rover is for life... not just for Christmas!!

The man I bought the Td5 from had it just 3 years and was clocking up 50K per year - he bought it with only about 16K on the clock . It had been parked up for quite a while.
All he had done with it during his 3 years of ownership was normal servicing and one rear airbag replaced - but as the company was paying for it it was done regularly and thoroughly . So it says a lot for the Td5 and I'm hoping to get a few more years out of it by continuing the same way .

No problems - that one at Shardlow looks a good buy - hope he gets it

by the way Badadj - is this 'my mate' stuff all true or is it really you who wants the disco ;) - go on, you can admit it, it's nothing to be ashamed of :D:D

yep - I've heard quite a few people say that the TD5 engine should keep on going until the rest of the vehicle falls apart & even then the engine will carry on down the road on its own :D - mine's done 93K with full main dealer servicing & had new rear airbags & ace bushes last year - so hopefully it will last me a good few years.
