Opening tailgate, broken button??

The tailgate on my 2.5TD won't open, pressing the button does nothing. Is there any way around it to get the tailgate open manually from the inside?

my main issue is getting to the inside of the tailgate as that wee flap that runs along the bottom of the inside is blocking access to the panel to remove it.

I managed it by drilling three holes in the said flap opposite the screws that retain the door card. But it is a struggle to get the card off. You can then easily flick the mechanism to open.
Alternatively you could use a holesaw opposite the mechanism which maybe you could plug afterwards.
Otherwise identify the wires that come from the button and trigger it that way.

This can be caused by a failing front right door latch -- have you had any problems with door locks working by themselves?

I could pull the flap back enough to gain access.
