Only smokey at startup?

Hi folks,
Wondered if you could advise.
My 83 2.25 diesel is really smokey at startup and for longer than 10 secs. But once it's been running for a short while it's fine. Any suggestions as to what could be causing this? I'm new to diesel engines only ever had petrol. Not sure how to setup injectors, pump etc.

Wouldn't worn piston rings mean blue smoke all the time?
