If the gearbox spline is stripped you end up with a rear wheel drive Freelander as the drive to the front just spins in the spline. The drive to the rear goes through the VCU to the rear diff.

The freelander is front wheel drive at the moment, has i said i the top of the
thread on muddy ground she was spinning the front wheels only.
so does that mean it is the splines in the IRD.
 
This will be the thrust bearing in the ird has collapsed, allowing the crown wheel to move across enough for the pinion to spin over the top of it. The result is a wrecked crown wheel and pinion and you will need a replacement or recon IRD. The car could carry on like this for 1000's of miles, but eventually the thrust bearing fall to bits or some of the broken off bits of metal will jam in another gear and everything come to a halt. If you do replace the bird, ensure you have the vcu checked/replaced and you tires matched as one of these will be the causing fault, don't just stick another ird withouy curing the cause in as it will fail again
 
Up date on the 4 wheel or in my case, 2 wheel drive.
i was of work today and decided to look under the car and i jacked up the drivers side
rear wheel. the rear wheel turned freely and i looked at the drive shafts and the vcu up
to the IRD turned together. so does that mean the IRD is f==ked as i do have a grouling
noise from that area, so the car is in 2 wheel drive. if the vcu and all the rear and front props are going round together with no resistants at all, is the bearings and the guts of the IRD in sh=te. it also could be the splines and i would have to remove the front prop
and rule that out first before i would be looking for a recon IRD when funds become available. what do you guys think.

IRD is at fault by the look of it.
 
Yep disconnect front prop and remove pinion and have a peep inside. You should see something like this:

my old one did this just front wheel drive and it was the "new" VCU from freelander spares a new one sorted it ,back into 4 wheel drive
 
That is correct if front half of prop is being driven thru the VCU from the rear wheels, but if the front prop is being driven by IRD then not. The critical thing is whether drive is going thru the VCU or not.

Reading this post the OP states all of the prop rotates, hence its not the vcu
 
Thanks guys for all the reply,s , so it can be a ruined crown and bearing,s in the IRD or
the vcu could be open circuit. then if the IRD is f==ked would i be right that the vcu
would have caused this in the first place. there is no change noises from the diff thank god,
i will when i get a the time pull the front off and have a look in there and go from there.
 
No. Water muddying, I am afraid. If turning the rear wheel turned the front VCU prop, unlikely for VCU to be open circuit. But it could be buggered sufficient to damage the IRD.

Remove prop.
Fix ird
Get vcu checked prior to refit.

Ok i will do that, can the IRD be removed and still drive the car are is that not
possible. if not if i do remove the front prop will i have to fit a blanking plate
over the back of the IRD. is it best to repair the mine own IRD or buy recon
or second hand from breaker if i can get one.

the nearside driveshaft is driven from the ird, so it's not possible to drive the car with the ird removed.

buy a recon one if you can or if not buy a second hand one with a good warranty.

a blanking plate is not necessary when the front prop is removed.
