Wile out on the moor yesterday my engine cut out and I had to roll back down a hill into a lay by, the problem was when I tried to get out of it. As it was muddy and steep I selected 4 wheel drive low range, but the car simply shuddered up and down in till I gave up, and so reversed out onto flat ground only then could the car move forward. It felt as if it was a clutch problem, as if too higher gear.
Then today in a muddy field the same happened again, but I could see that the front wheels would not move even though the back ones were spinning. When they did move it was at an inch at a time. After three attempts to cross the mud the front wheels engaged and I was off, however they did not work again. Could it be a transfer box problem, free wheel hubs not working or the clutch giving up, please help.

I've just been and tried that and they don't turn when 4WD is engaged so that's good. but what else could it be.

I'm not shore, the only righting is 'Free' and 'Flzee' the rest is unidentifiable. but you need a spanner to look them.

the only ones i know of that need a spanner are MAPs, they look good but can give trouble if not maintained correctly

the body is all aluminium and each one has four steel pawls in them, if there is no oil in them you'll suffer the pawls getting stuck in the disengaged position (been there suffered it)

this can be dangerous for the hubs as only one pawl "could" engage putting all the drive stress on one local point, this could crack the main housing

it might be time for you to strip and clean them

Yeah looking on the web, they are most like MAPs. and as there is no oil leaking out ill take this as there is no oil left. So thank you I'll try that.

I've just stripped them, a lot of water fell out but mainly old oil. I think the springs broke and lodged the pawls open, judging by the bits of spring floating about. So thanks again everyone.
