Question though, is it possible to use the high beam switch ( on the steering column ) on the relay? I can't see that working as it'll have a seperate current flowing through it for normal high beam, but i may be wrong.

That's fine - where it says "switch in dash", take this to the high beam switch. Then wire the spots to the "Added Circuit". Make sure you fit an appropriate fuse in the wire from the relay back to the battery.

I did however have some issues tonight with the high beam switch, whether this is related i don't know.

When i wired up the spots the other day i realised then that the high beam flash ( pull to flash ) wasn't working, but put this down to a fault somewhere as the wiring in the dash is pretty dire. However tonight i was upto putting a switch in for the interior light as none existed, but was having issues getting anything to work.

Checking the fuse's, the one on the left at the top ( as you look at it ) was blown, but was rated @ 35amp....which i think is rather odd as the wire certainly doesn't look like a 35 amp! The fog, interior light, clock and something else are all wired into that fuse ( again 35amp seems well high ) so i replaced it with a 10Amp as instructed on the fuse cover.

Still no power at all along the that fuse line, so it's now time to trace it all back along inside the dash and find the fault.
 
So you don't have three little switches down to the right of the steering wheel? One of these is usually the interior light switch.

I had 2, one is the hazard light switch, the other was for the dash lights, although the dash light connector had the interior lights connected to it as well, but just a 1 way switch ( which powered on the dash lights, not the interior )
 
Had enough trying to figure out the terrible wiring, so stripping the dash down tonight, bought a shed load of connectors, some relays, 2 new fuse holders and going to re do what i can, will post pics as i go along.
 
loads done over the past few days, will post pics when I get back online again.

oil change
air filter change
fuel pump replaced
glow plugs replaced
swapped volt & oil gauges around
rear speakers fitted
headlining fixed back up
carpet tiled wheel arches
light smoked film on rear window
refitted exhaust from turbo ( it was loose)


today I'm redoing the electric in the front dash

Back online now so i'll get something together over the next few days regarding a meet up, maybe this weekend or the end of the month as i'm away on the 18th to Newcastle in the Landy, so needs must, money has to be put aside for that ;)
 
Bloody hell Paul ... 400 mile trip one way from yours !!! .... ear plugs and a fuel tanker is needed me thinks . Think the old girl will make it ? she is a TD mind lol :p .

I've given her a good service, i have apprx 60 litres of veg oil stored with another 20 or so coming next week, plus diesel i reckon it could be pretty cost effective.

I'm dropping the Steering guard into you on the way up mate, in the morning at some point, i'll text/ring you nearer the time ;)
 
Work done tonight:

Fitted 2 extra switch's for interior lights, one main in the middle of the roof and another LED strip in the front cab passenger side as a ' reading ' light for the missus. Wired up and fitted the cig lighter as well.





Re routed wiring into the cab from the spots for the relay.

One issue i've had though is with these 3 pronged illuminated switchs, I'm stumped as to how they work. I ran an earth, a live and the cable to the item i required switching, they don't seem to work, what am i missing? Will post a pic tomorrow at some point.
 
Hmm front nearside lights are acting very odd. This isn't connected to the spots as they have a seperate feed n earth all to them selves now, but i'm thinking there is an earth issue somewhere. The rear indicator has a low light to it as well when the front lights are on.

On the high beam, the indicator comes on...

The offside is perfect btw, just the nearside, i did think it had something to do with the terrible state of the tow bar electrics, but i've tidied those up and capped them off as the bar will be removed for the MOT.
 
Do you have a multimeter? Tracking down issues like this is a lot easier if you can check for voltage and continuity, rather than just guessing. Be methodical, and don't assume anything!
 
Double check your earths Paul as you did have that side apart - any rust , get rid of it and give em a good clean up with sandpaper or replace the connections :) .
