Almost made it a few weeks ago to tixover, but just before I got to the gate there was a sound from I think the rear like a bearing race sound being loose, a rattle and metal sound sometimes in time with the wheel going round. Stopped and checked but nothing obvious, limped home, checked rear wheel bearings and found that the hub nut (torque up ones) had been fitted as if it was the twin nut type, I.e. done up, backed off and then preened over instead of torqueing up to 155ftpds, stripped all hub down checked bearings regreassed and reassembled the correct way, road tested and noise still there but seems to be more in time with going over bumps/potholes but still a noise like a bearing race loose. Checked for play in props, a little play in front one but not bad, rear all ok, oil level ok, looked through hole when bung out and appears to be ok. Thinking that wheel bearings have gone past saving but not sure. Any ideas anyone ????

1997 300 tdi discs all round so newer rear axle I beleave.

Well, was doing my head in thinking about what it could be so under neath again I went this morning and was going to start removing things like props but started looking around again before so and found the o/s rear bottom shocker washer was loose, had checked before by grabbing hold of shocker and trying to shake it but it was ok, found that nut was tight but as the bush wears it couldn't be done up any more as it goes to a coller, anyway, drilled a washer and sandwiched between to make it tight again, road test and seems all ok now.

Fancy that. :doh
