had to change the stereo in my p38 as some one put the wrong code in too many times. got locked out. tryed leving it on, ignition in the ferst position. till the morning an all i got was a flat battery. wired up a new one and carnt get any sound from the cars speakers. all speaker wires are giving out, when i conect a hi fi speaker to each of them. and i get static coming out of all doors when old stez in pluged in. can enyone give me some advise? dont fancy bridging all the system. fancy hittin it with a hammer!

Is the new one a P38 Clarion/Alpine unit or aftermarket?

Knowing what you started with, and what stereo system was originally in the car, would be a help. They vary greatly.

You do know that if the original was a Clarion that you could have got it repaired and even a USB input fitted?

sorry i tuk so long had to digg it out off the bin;) ...looking at the thing in my hand all i can see as a makers name is R.D.S./EON DIVERSITY and then the LandRover sign. can digg out the speakers to see what make they are...

I believe that's a Clarion head unit. If so it's probably wired through an amp in the boot and maybe even one in each door. This set up won't take kindly to 'any' head unit. I think that you might have a bit more work to do.

A lot more work to do!

Aftermarket HU's need special leads to get the amps to work the speakers. There is another thread on about the same thing that gives a link to rr.net explaining how to build your own crossovers to get the system to use the speakers you have.

Or, like me, rip it out and start from scratch.

ripping it now...thanks for all your help;)

Hang on to any amps and speakers that you remove. Some believe that it's worth re-wiring a new head unit into these to get what they reckon is a great sound, if you've got the patience. So it might be worth trying any 'extra' bits on ebay or similar.

the old stereo is working again, wired it back in to show a mate my plite and its asking for the code again. will have to go to RR to get the correct code this time and i'm away. lucky i did't get very far with the ripping out part. would be nice to have a moden head unit in there. wonted to use my i pod. c.d. changer (in the back) jumps on every bump. anyway thanks again for all the advice. by the way i'm looking for a rad and fan for a 96, p38, dse, bmw. if you know of any one....
