On board welder.

While laning at the weekend my mates shock turret broke on a lane, all was ok, simply removed it and welded it back up when we got to camp, just to get him home.

It made me think about a mobile welder. I've got a 300tdi with no air con. I could put an alternator there and rig a belt if/as and when I needed it..

for the price of an 'ebay' alternator, some welding cables, a belt and tensioner and fabricating a mounting plate - a field welder!

It's a great idea ... I've got my old alternator I can donate to the project. Works fine, just needs the bearings sorting ... makes a bit of a noise, but charges fine and would be fine to prove it works before spending too much on it ..

Now if the courier service can get an alternator from Doncaster to your area it might be worth considering ...

Paul that's really kind, but i've now sourced a 'similar' alternator with a bearing issue from one of my club members. who's gonna meet me today.

At this stage i just want the spacings for the mounting, ulimatley if it's a goer, i'll buy a brand new alternator for my truck and use the existing one...

from what I gather the alternator voltatage regulator needs to be striped out, then you put a rehostat in the exiter coil to control the ampage, and use the engine revs to bring it up to around the 36v mark. but i'd like the best of both worlds so i can also use the power source as a spare charging alternator/inverter generator/welder/winching booster

I started to weld up the bracket last night, being so close to the throttle actuator on the fuel pump I need some clever design to press on the throttle with a variable to lock the revs at a certain point/s. and even some sort of quick release frame so it can be dropped onto position with little fuss. It's all going round my head at the moment, hopefully I can lay it down in metal before I get bored of the idea and sack it off...!!

i was going to get one of them ebay digital volt/amp meters, for about 20 quid and wire that in, then i guess it's trial and error to find the settings on the pot and engine revs...

...Dunno, I wanna see if the stock 300 alternator can be modified first, seems a much better plan to use the same alternator as what is fitted already..

I've heard about guys modifying an alternator to act as a makeshift welder as well as still acting as an alternator (not heavy duty but can really get one out of a spin in the bush). Does anyone know how this is done, as my knowledge of electrcity is dangerous - I need to do a little research before doing something like that. Anyone done a mod like this yet, how well does it really work? Sorry, hope its relevant - living in Africa u sometimes need to make your own plan - last trip in a landy we ended up having to stick strips of the carpet to the clutch so we could get home (pratleys steel worked wonder - and no I am not paid to say that); we took 3 hrs on the road to do that job (f&*$@n hot!), but it drove another 450 odd km where we could change the clutch properly - ha ha.

So, any help would be appreciated.

Another project Im interested in is a compressor system using and aircon pump and some tanks (dive bottles or fire extinguishers or something) havent really checked whats the correct spec yet, but its fairly simple to do. A friend of mine runs a aircon pump on his landy just for emergencies, reckons itll inflate a big tyre in no time! Would be cool to be able to run pneumatic drills/grinder/rivet gun and be able to weld while travelling hey - to help the guys in land cruisers of course
