Ominous bearing/droning noise from transfer box

Just had tmy '03 TD4 in for an MOT (Just new wiper blades for a pass). Its recently developed an ominous bearing/droning noise, sounds like a wheel bearing. I mentioned this to the mechanic when I dropped it off and he said he'd have a look. His diagnosis is that the noise is definitely coming from the transfer box, sounded like a worn bearing and he didn't want to go in there.

Any ideas, is this a common fault? Expensive?
DIY fix or specialist? Who's good around Bristol?

not very expensive and an easy diy job.
