Older Freelander Di / VCU IRD

I have read a lot about the TD4 Freelanders having VCU and the IRD drive which give 2 - 4 wheel drive depending on conditions, is this the same with the older L Series version. Or is that permanent 4 wheel drive and what system does this have.

Its perm front wheel drive with the rear driven via a VC.

The two have the same system. The TD4-age Freelander has different spec components which resolved the transmission problems that the early ones were beginnning to get a reputation for.
