Hi all - i have a B reg 90. I did some work on the front axle 3 years ago when I first had the truck - swivel bearings, wheel bearings and seals. Its now got lots of backlash in the drive at the front and often clunks two or three times when cornering under load. I seem to recollect when it was in pieces that the drive shafts ran in brass bushes rather that roller bearings as later units. I guess ive got a CV/universal joint gone on one of the drive shafts but is this old axle worth overhauling or would i be better off just changing the whole thing for a later design?

thanks
steve

Depends on useage. A CV isn't that hard or expensive to change...which I assume is where the clicks are coming from.

If the back lash is in the diff that can be removed as well.

An axle from a rotten Discovery should set you back about £100 for a good one and will nut and bolt swap if you retain your calipers. However, your current front axle does have the strongest CVs LR ever made.....and probably the weakess diff :)

thanks - ive looked on Paddocks/Craddocks - are the brass bushes that the drive shaft runs in still available from anywhere?

thanks
steve

Ahh if only LR made 24 spline inner shafts to the earlyer type CV innerds Alas Ashcroft it will be once I save and Save and Save some more! Jai
