Hi all,

Vehicle Defender 110 , 2.5TDI 1991 CSW

Fault: getting through a fuel solenoid every 1000 miles (getting stupid)

Today again it broke down and the fuel solenoid was faulty. New solenoid and
works fine. I did notice last time it happened was a piece of silvery metal
on the plunger (obviously causing it to stick).

Anyone any ideas why I am replacing them so often? Is the pump maybe
breaking down big time? Should I be looking for some where else for the
fault.

How much will I pay for a reconditioned fuel pump?

HELP PLEASE

Andy

To recondition your existing pump will probably set you back around
£100 or perhaps a little more.

Had the injector pump on my 2.5 n/a done at the local diesel
specialist place a couple of years ago.

You probably dont want to even consider how much buying a second
reconditioned pump will cost you! (I think it was £300-£400 when i
last checked)

That must have been a long time ago!
I've just had a VE rebuilt, cost £600.

Its almost certainly a fuel pump fault, the cam ring will be breaking up.
This happens quite often nowadays with all the low sulphur fuel.
Depending on how long it has been like that, you may also have damaged the
pumping element beyond repair, that is the expensive bit of the pump, the
part alone is about £200-£300.

I've just had a VE rebuilt for about half that (not for a LR) -
including a new advance plate. The quotes before I got the job done
ranged from 300 to 700 pounds so it's probably worthwhile phoning around
to see if you can find someone reasoably priced.

As has been pointed out in another reply, those silvery shards
are the first sign that the injector pump is on the way out.
You need to get it sorted out sooner rather than later. Your local
diesel specialist will do the job, price varies enourmously, but
it will be a lot cheaper now rather than when the cam ring breaks up.
Most specialists will replace the rollers with new softer metal
versions that seen to cure the problem (the originals were too
hard and rather than wearing started chipping - hence the shards).
