Main Gearbox (R380?) ATF Dexron II 2.67 litres the later r380's have a modified cross drilled input gear which is why the lube recommendations are different.

Transfer Gearbox... Hypoid gear oil EP 80w-90 GL4 2.8 litres

Front axle.....Hypoid gear oil EP 80w-90 GL4 1.7 litres

Rear axle......Hypoid gear oil EP 80w-90 GL4 2.26 litres

Swivel pin housing....if the housing has no drain or level plug and only a filler it is filled for life, if you're overhauling them use the one shot grease from land rover, about 7 quid each.

MTF94 is recommended for the TD5 R380 gear box from 1998>

So... when I replace my gearbox oil I could use either MTF94 or Dexron 3??

So am I right in thinking I should use MTF94 as its the 'latest' recommeded by Land Rover??

Thanks for the help.... I may replace the swivel lube with one shot.

the up to date recommendation for your landy is defo ATF D2 not MTF94

some have used the difflock MTF fluid with success but it is different from MTF94, it's thinner and it's fully synthetic

MTF94 is like a 10w40 and the ATF and the difflock oil is more like a 5w30

If you want to upgrade your gearbox oil then go for the difflock Evolution oil, if not stick to the ATF

Many thanks...I did a bit more research on the R380 and it was very slightly modified for the TD5 so ATF D2 or 3 suits my gearbox.... I decided to go with ATF D3 (Comma £17 for 5 ltrs) and changed it last night. I was amazed at what came out of the gearbox it was a muddy brown mess. A noticable improvement in getting second gear from a cold start... overall much smoother.... very pleased.
I wonder what crap I will get out of the Transfer Gearbox when I change the oil in it next week.... could it improve things even more?
I bodged a squeezy bottle and some tube to fill the box but it was still a pain..... found this little pump that can be used on Ebay... £15.49 but it will make filling diffs and boxes much easier.. Laser 4385 Multi Purpose Mini Pump on eBay (end time 21-Oct-10 20:03:30 BST)

It will defo make a noticable difference when you change the transfer box oil, the diff oils will make a difference too. If there is one thing that gets missed on landies it's transmission lubes. They all need changing every 2 years or 24000 miles max so you will be blessing that pump every time you use it! Might be worth doing a brake fluid change as well if it hasn't been done (every 2 years max)
