Oil pump priming

Here's a question for you Rover V8 gurus out there. I've resurrected my Series 2A V8 and managed to get it running (albeit for a few seconds as the oil is probably 20 years old!). I'm about to drain the oil and refill with Valvoline VR (which seems to be the oil of choice for V8s) within fit a new filter. However, I've read that the V8 oil pump should be primed before restarting up the engine after an oil change. There's all sorts of suggestions including removing the distributor and spinning something with an electric drill.....
My question is this - my Landy has a remote spin off oil filter adapter and the filter is located quite high, above the level of the alternator, with oil pipes running down to an adapter on the engine block. Would it be sufficient to undo the pipes to the remote filter and fill them with oil to provide a 'header' of oil for the pump? Would this be sufficient to 'prime' the oil pump? Or do I have to do this clever thing with the electric drill? Help! Thanks, Richard

Just fill it with oil and turn the key..

Pull the dizzy and use a tool or a socket over the end of the pump drive, that is only if you lost prime on the pump which is unlikely..

just keep your eye on the pressure gauge

oil and filter change shouldnt require you to prime the pump, thats for when you strip the pump

Thanks guys - must confess I'd never heard of 'priming the pump' before but it came up on some Rover V8 site I was looking at.
