Having my evening in with the Landy in the garage, i had a good look around the engine bay and underneath spotting a few areas of oil leaks which i'd like to rectify as part of the ongoing project of perking the engine up abit.

First area i spotted was the timing cover at the bottom, this had fresh oil gathered and most mornings, there is one or two spots where she sits underneath this area.

The picture isn't great as i had my phone in one hand and a torch in the other ;)

I've read this could be a camshaft seal problem amongst others, and removing the timing cover is the next step for a full investigation.

Next point was oil in the air filter, also oil in the oil breather pipe ( from the oil filler cap ) and oil from the turbo area to the the air filter. I've read this could be seals within the turbo causing oil to enter the air filter pipes, is this a likely cause?

The engine oil levels appear to be fine, about 4mm off the 'H' mark and the oil is nice n black with no watery content, over a period of a week with over 500 miles clocked there hasn't been much oil loss ( none that required a top up at least ).

Another area of concern is the power steering module, i gave it a clean a week ago of any excess oil, but looking tonight it's back to it's current state of oil everywhere around this area. Unfortunately it's hard to pinpoint the area causing it, so if anyone has an idea of common seals/gaskets going within the Power Steering , i'd appreciate it.

Finally starting her is fine, she smokes like a bitch and idles abit rough ( seperate thread regarding injectors ), tomorrow i will give a short video of her starting to show the result.

I've searched here and googled these particular finds and the wealth of info is stretched out abit as to the causes & remedies, but sticking it in one thread makes it abit easier to keep track of faults/results etc.

Cheers

Took a video today of smoke on start up: (click pic to start vid )

This one was taken 15 minutes after driving around:

Any ideas on cause's or normal behavior?

The start up smoke looks fairly normal for a TD lump to me, but it should definitely have cleared its throat after 15 minutes driving. I take it the engine was at operating temperature after 15 mins?

Pretty much, although i didn't check tbh, driving locally around town.

Put some injector cleaner in her today and the smoke dissapears after 10 minutes driving around, so hopefully sorted the issue, but i'll keep an eye on it.

Got some prices for Injector inspections and resets if needed, £30 an injector, same price as new ones.

I'm going to be removing the timing cover to work out that oil leak, complete engine oil change (+ filter ) and replacing the oil in the axles and replacing the dust caps on all wheels. I'll also replace the gearbox & Transfer box oil as well.

Thats normal for a TD motor ( smokes less than mine did ) . If your stuck for injectors my bro has 3 ( cant find the 4th :( ) recon ones he no longer needs if your interested ? .
PAS pump Low pressure feed pipe go's brittle and start to crack , thats where your leak could be coming from .
Defo take the timing case off to see what seal is leaking ( you will need some big sockets for the crankshaft pully ) - do a cam belt change too when your there . You will prob need some heat on the case bolts as 9 out of 10 there siezed in there ( when refitting the cover , cover bolts and thred with coppa slip/grease ) .

Sent ya a PM :D

Timing cover is due to come off this week, when i get the tools together to do it and i shall investigate the PAS pump pipe for any sign of wear as well, cheers

Followed some advice from POS regarding some engine checks when at optimum running temp and the results weren't very good.

Upon removing the dipstick, smoke was chuffing out the tube and upon removing the rocker cover breather pipe a fair amount of pressure and smoke was coming out of that.

Will post vids on my next longish journey.
