the legendary 4.2 toyota 6 cylinder can leak doozil in to the sump if the seal on the injection pump/front cover gives up. my mate spotted that his oil had gone up 1/4 inch in a week and wondered why. luckily caught it in time because he checked his oil every week. wonder how many of us do

I have seen a lot of strange things happen, but i am not having it that an engine can run well one minute and expire the next having filled the sump with diesel. The injector pump would take several hours to fill the sump past a blown piston and the engine would have been running like a bag of spanners all that time. We will have to wait and see.

He said 'led me to believe' which baint be quite the same thing. The volume of oil could be a mix with water but not yet emulsified couldn't it? I dont know what happens if you have a dramatic HGF, I'd like to know but dont want to find out..........if you know what I mean

Think i have already said that. He said oil level rose overnight. If coolant has run into sump overnight it will be at bottom, oil will be floating on top of it he may not get any coolant on the dipstick at all, just an abnormally high oil level. We will have to wait and see what has gone on. But i do really think this diesel going past a piston from a leaking injector is a none starter.

my reply about injectors was not about this problem as i havent read it but just a cause for diesel in sump ,and it does take time ,used to go to a farmer who was proud that his engine made oil and didnt loose it ,you couldnt explain to him

Well James IF he has diesel in his sump, it is far more likely to be pump seal. If it is coolant it is going to be a head gasket. We will have to wait and see. I have never seen a pump seal leak since the first rotary pumps came out. CAV DPA pumps used to fail on the seal all the time, it was a bad design fault. I have seen lots of trucks with gallons of diesel in the sump.

reading first post i suspect not the whole story ,have seen plenty of burnt through pistons through poor injectors on petrol as well as diesel though only 3 petrol , but could be hgf

But the OP does not say the engine was running rough before it suddenly expired. It just went pop according to him. With the engine running at 30 mph, doing say 30 mpg the injector pump would deliver one sixth of a gallon of fuel to each injector over that time. So if one injector was duff, to get one sixth of a gallon of diesel into the sump, it would have to run for at least an hour with a blown piston, even if all the fuel injected went straight into the sump. That does not seem to be the senario we have here.

When the pump is not pushing against the resistance of the injector you get more fuel out of it do you not. What's with this + after Wammers? Is it like Sky+??

we dont know how well it ran before whether it was using water ,poor injector, just offering other possibility,didnt mention heater going cold or temp rising too,good morning

Take a syringe fill it with 5ml of litres of diesel. Then press plunger and see how much comes out. This pumping fuel past a duff piston is a bloody none starter. I will be amazed if that is the cause. If there is any great amount of diesel in the sump it has to be the pump seal. He said oil level rose overnight. That has to be coolant causing that. You simply CANNOT get enough diesel into a cylinder with one cycle to hydraulic the piston. It is not possible. If the injector was dripping he would have had serious black smoke for some time, it would have been obvious. Friends have + behind their names. There is one behind yours on my computer.

Hi, spoke to the mechanic today and found out there is a hole in the engine?! Anyway it needs a new engine, I'll keep you updated. How long does it take to swap out one of these lumps? Cheers.

depends on your mechanic - anywhere between 4 hours and 48 hours.
What hole, where, how big. The engine has many places to have holes, some even have a thread in them

well I have seen a few marine doozils with holes in the piston from hot spots but I think this time he prob means a hole in the block

Don't know where yet, just lots of oil came out of it and it's terminal.

Well throwing a rod would certainly make a noise as it came through the crank case. Nobody got it quite right, but i did mention terminal earlier on. That is about as terminal as it gets unfortunatly.

hhmmm was it piston melt from leaky injector or thinned oil from fpi seal leak
