excess goes past rings over time ,often burns piston ,had it with a 3.5 efi x 3 on same car ,too but would think of checking pump first

Twas my 1st thought anorl but wasn't going to 2nd guess you and JM :D

Well he said there was diesel in the oil, that can only come from one source in any great quantity. It certainly sounds like the crank case has pressurised, either by being filled with diesel or combustion gases. So it could be either really we will have to wait and see. Whatever it is it sounds like something has gone pretty terminal. If there is indeed diesel in sump would still go for pump seal, with head gasket second.

A duff injector pouring fuel into a cylinder can lead to some pretty dramatic effects if the engine is running at speed, like bust rings/piston and a fair amount of diesel in the sump.

The amount of diesel injected at any time is minute, fuel can only be delivered to that injector when the delivery valve is open to it once per cycle. Yes the piston can hydraulic and snap the ring lands but that will only happen usually with coolant ingress. A massive amount of fuel would be needed to be introduced in one cycle to do that. The injector pump is simply not capable of delivering that amount of fuel in one cycle before the exhaust valve opens and it is ejected. The engine would have to be run for a considerable time in that state to show any rise in sump content. Unless the sumps extra content is coolant.

duff injector can do as decribed..seen it..been there.(was 3 out of 6 though,****e fuel).cost £5k in the end..but not on a LR,but a kumatsu..c.d.engine..
