Evening all.Not sure if this is the right site so have also posted on the engine site. Following the success of your last replies to my post I have found another fault (at least I think it is).
The engine is a 1.8 petrol K series in 2003 freelander (I know I know) but the good lady bought it before I could research it and now I am having to sort it out.
My question is this....looking at the engine from the front of the car,on the right hand side of the block I believe I can see the end of the cam shaft spinning and there is an oil leak. There are two holes ,one on either side that have been tapped as if there should be a cover plate bolted over the opening.Should there be a cover or is the seal leaking.
Hope this makes sense.
Thanks for any help.Bosnian

The cam belt should have a three piece cover set-up. The back bit bolts on with the small bolt holes you mention. It goes on before the cam pulleys and cam belt. The other two are the upper and lower front covers. All these enclose the cam belt, tensioner w'pump...

Cam seals can leak - it's not unknown. They are low cost and can easily be replaced, and you don't have to remove the head, cam covers, belt and inner [or rear] cam cover too.

There should be a cover for the rear cam ends. However they only stop objects from accidentally touching the cams. They are not sealed covers, so won't stop your leak. It'll be the oil seals as said above;) They are cheap and easy to replace. But make sure you get good quality seals, or they will leak again;)
