Looking for guidance, stripped my water pump today to change the leaking P gasket, when removing the top intercooler hose there was a fair bit of wet oil about inside the hoses and shinning a torch into the intercooler you could see the wet oil covering the inside, it's just passed it's Mot and exhaust doesn't smoke, emissions were point .6 up from .3 last year but still well within the 1.5 pass level, the only two places I know of would be the engine breather pipe or oil out of the Turbo, in the last few weeks the car has gained a few oil leaks, from the rocker cover, around the oil filter area and on the crancase behind the inlet/outlet manifold, the EGR hose is blanked off, crankcase breather hoses are all clear but do have some oil on their internal surfaces,

any thoughts ?

Pete

It doesn't sound like anything too serious. Take the turbo charger inlet pipe off, if that has oil in it as well then it is probably just from the breather, rather than the turbo bearings.
It may help performance and smoke emissions if you remove the intercooler, pipes and inlet manifold and give them all a good clean with paraffin.
The other thing to do (if you are concerned about the emissions, is to run some injector cleaner through the fuel system, or even get a diesel specialist to test the injectors)

have the same problem with our 94 300 tdi. Only with mines its the turbo Alot of play on the turbine shaft. Simple test take hose off from the turbo to the intercooler, Put a sheet of a4 white paper in front of the turbo oulet, with the engine running and see if you get any oil splatter on the paper. Hopefully its just the breather as said above.

speaking of intercoolers i cleaned mine the other day and when i filled it full of petrol there was a small leak. Is it an emergency change ? or can i leave it ?

If your intercooler is leaking you are losing out on some turbo-assisted power and will therefore feel a little gutless and use more fuel. Probably smoke more too.

Get a 2nd hand one for peanuts from ebay:

perfect Dave thanks for that :)

Hypathetically could you connect 2 intercoolers together for extra cooling ?

Hi mate, usually when people ask that sort of question, what's behind it is a desire for more performance.

IF that's the case here, might I suggest that there are lots of other things you can do to improve umph, depending on on what model/year of Disco you have.

Cheers

Next thing is to replace the down pipe from the exhaust manifold with a straight through one from a defender, assuming yours has a cat.

And do a good service...

But the answer to your question is that if you can cool the air more, allowing more air in to the engine* (which a second intercooler would do), then you can adjust the fuel pump to deliver more fuel...more fuel + more air = more power

*Air expands (and heats up) as it is compressed by the turbo, cooling it contracts it, allowing more air in to a given volume of cylinder.

if you do the pump mods won't it make the MPG worse? and wont it make it smoke more and affect the emmisions? and the pump mods is this the mod where you change the plunger and shim the gov?
Sorry to thread jack

1. No, not if it is done correctly;

2. No, not if it is done correctly;

3. No.
