Oil filter leak - help

I have just replaced the oil filter and seal on my series 3 2.25 petrol and checking the mounting was clean and had no remnants of the old seal in. All was fine and then I took her for a drive and oil is now pouring out of the top of the oil filter housing where it joins the mounting. I had this problem last year and ended up putting the old oil seal back on. This year I thought it was fine but now it is leaking badly, please help.

Wrong size seal ? Have you still got the old ne to compare with?

They were identical in size, I checked. Could the filter work loose?

I wonder if the casing or mating surface has warped slightly.

So after covering everything including myself in oil, it appears that the oil seal had become detached and was floating in the housing. How on earth this happened I don't know but I refitted it and it seems ok now

It helps with seating when fitting to turn the filter body when tightening the bolt
