Oil cooler pipe

I am off on a very long journey on Monday (1500 miles) and have just discovered I have an oil leak on the oil cooler pipe that goes from the top of the radiator to the rear of the oil filter housing. I have a 1994 300Tdi and I am just a little concerned that this may get worse quickly. The leak is on the joint where the rubber pipe is attached to the metal pipe that fits onto the radiator. At the moment the leak is a very slow one as I am seeing no difference in my oil level.

Can anyone tell me if this pipe actually works under high pressure or low and what the chances are of it suddenly failing on me. I would just replace it, but because of where I live, I don't have easy access to new parts. I generally have to wait a number of days for delivery so time is not on my side.

If i was you i'd get it changed, if it lets go it'll empty the sump in seconds, could you arrange to pick one up on route, its not a big job to change, any hydraulic place will make you one up.

Put a jubille clip around the pipe and as already suggested pick one up on route, also keep a good eye on your oil level (every 100miles or so)

if the split is near the end is there scope to cut an inch off and reconnect? still need to replace asap tho

Thanks for the rapid replies lads. I'm going to a local agricultural supplier shortly to see if they can repair it. I understand they make up hydraulic pipes.

Just take care whem you undo the oil cooler end make sure the lot dosent twist, also they have rubber o rings on them, don't over tighten .

Thanks Dent. I will be as careful as I can and will heed your advice re. not overtightening.

I find it best to put some clean oil on the o ring, helps it seal, its easy to damage them.

I'm yet to get my head round this job. These things always seem simple until it comes to doing them.

I don't have a ramp or a pit and it looks like the oil filter end of this pipe is not exactly in an easy to get to sort of place, let alone try and spot o rings etc.

I have spoken to a Landrover parts supplier who has promised to get me a replacement part of Saturday morning so will update you when I have tackled the job. I just hope I don't uff it up cos that will really be a problem.

You'll be fine ,give it all a good clean first, makes it better to work on .
