oil consumption

Engine is coming out this weekend. Oil is coming out like blood, streaming down the rocker cover now... I think improving the head and valves has put more pressure on the obviously weak piston rings.

Engine will go away and come back as a short engine and I'll get the injectors and pump looked at as-well. I'm going to buy gasket kit for the engine (STC1559), head is already done but i probably need a new head gasket again anyway so may buy that kit (STC1562). Clutch seems ok but sometimes judders when pulling off in 1st, the kit costs £86 (STC8358) so question is should i be sensible and replace the clutch whilst engine is out anyway, or be tight and leave it alone? Hot spots have very slight cracks but still look servicable until next time.

Also going to do seals on gearbox & t-box as both drip(worse in heat of summer). RTC6797 and RTC3890 are just under £10 and are hopefully the right ones for my box (LT77S i think).

Most important question is.... Have i missed anything?

if it was me and i was going to the effort of yanking the engine out i would change the clutch, you would be ****ed if 2 weeks after you sorted it your clutch went. Fit the HD clutch fork whilst your at it and it might be worth looking at oil seals on the gearbox that you cant usually get to.

Sounds like a bummer dude, what you doing recon the engine or fitting a new one?

I will most likely sort the clutch & fork.

I've bid on a few of the reconditioned ones coming thru Withams. I've been bidding up to around £1k on the Withams ones but a recon short engine on exchange is £1250+VAT.

My current plan is to pull engine out and get it stipped to a 'short' engine. Cambridge Rebores has told me it'll cost around £500 for re-bore, pistons, shells, check cam etc. They'll pass on the injection equipment to a specialist which i think will come to around £150 + costs of any problems they find.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to slap a TDi engine in it?

Cheaper, assuming you get a decent one. The TDi will soon show up any weakneses in the gear train though, and a bad one might be a bigger headache. I like the sound of a rebuilt engine - they are a decent, long lasting engine when in good fettle, and suit the brakes and steering capabilities of an older landy. To go back to the original post, I recently covered 717 miles in a touring trip, all on road, averaging 45mph and 36mpg - I used just over 1/2 litre of oil.

Yeah to be fair I love my NA for it's no fuss simplicity, I rate it as an engine, okay it's not fast on motorways but it wasn't really designed for that.

Does everything the TDi boys do off road and to be honest I didn't struggle on some of the inclines due to the smoother non-turbo torque delivery making my wheels not spin

Exactly that. In good fettle it can do everything I need it to, brilliant off road and easy to fix. I had also the theory that if I put more power in I'll wear out everything much quicker and expose any weaknesses. Also it's a wedge of money but whats the risk that a tdi engine will have problems, at least I know what I'm getting. The na rules!

yeah quite :)

Well when you get back the short motor, if you need a hand, i can always try get a weekend free and head up your way to help refit

Totally agree, a rebuilt NA will last, if you get a second hand TDI you will still have to rebuild it one way or another.
Like Flat I love my N/A motor, cheap parts and simple to work on.
Will be doing a full rebuild on mine, probably next year as slight oil seep from front and rear crank seals.

It's out and in process of stripping. Bought an engine hoist in the end, much easier than trying to hire one twice and cost about the same too. I also have it for next time....

Not so much of a surprise when I took a peek at the clutch the bearing was loose, only one of the clips on it but not attached. This must have been why it juddered a lot from standstill sometimes. Other one was the old release arm punching through, mine is 'torn' about a third of the way round the dimple. New clutch and HD arm will be procured.

Rest of it has gone well so far, couple of studs came out but they'll go back in as-is. Still need to whip head off, strip down front end and get flywheel off. The bolts on this are quite stubborn so going to get an impact spanner on them.

One unsure thing was I forgot to loosen the crank nut so loosely put the electrics back on and something went pop and I ended up with nothing. I do need to replace a few wires as the glows melted a few months ago, check fuses, and I need to figure out how to bench test the starter to make sure that wasn't the 'pop'.

Cheers for the offer Ed, I will have a stab at getting it together myself first to save you a trip. I'm really looking forward to getting it running now based on what I've seen as it should feel much much better!

(I can't get the pics smaller on this comp so left them as attachments, will embed them at work if I can figure out editing posts)

It sounded a bit rattly when I spun it but not much play. Maybe it wouldn't have been much longer for failure. I'm definitely replacing full clutch and fork.

Cheers James

Engine now stripped! Only one surprise was this little fella (roller) over the 3rd Cam/valve position. I'm sure they are all meant to be round! I'm still not convinced the bores are all that bad so maybe this is the cause of the problems...

Next weekend I'll be dropping it off for re-bore etc so just got all the remaining stuff to clean up and get ready.

The tinyest of lips. Can just still see the cross hatching. Regardless now its going to Cambridge rebores, let them do their thing.

I'll take more pics this evening. SWMBO has demanded my attention this afternoon :(

ask how much the hone out to finished size , a couple of thou is good

Couple more pics of the roller. Two flat spots on it, there's a smaller one opposite ghe biggun. Smooth all round bar the smaller flat spot has a bit of a ridge on both sides. Must have been like this a while.

not sure about cam lobe. Didn't notice any damage on it or follower. It will get checked by the workshop anyway.
