Oil change, possible with pump type device?

Hi All,

Tomorrow I will be doing my first oil and filter change. I use a vacuum pump to empty the oil on my Volvo via the dip stick tube.

Can you get all of the oil out on a TD4, or do you have to do it from the sump plug?

I prefer doing it by removing the sump plug. There's nothing like the feeling of warm oil flowing down your arm
I assume you can drain the engine oil through the dip stick, not sure though. I know a guy who would know. Last name Guy, first name LR

i have seen this done so i say yes if ya pump tube isnt too wide, straight down the middle of the oil filter

But if you take the oil filter off surely it will spew oil over the road? I thought they had to be pumped through the dip stick?

This pumping oil out instead of draining is the cause of so many complaints of engines being overfilled. The guy doing your service sticks a pipe down the dip stick tube and assumes he has removed all the oil, he then sicks back in the correct amount of new oil, but if the sump hasn't been completly emptied it will put the level above the MAX mark on the dip stick. Believe me, it happened to me at a BMW garage and when I informed them I have never seen so many people in suits panic at the same time. I think the guy who did the service ended up washing customers cars for a month!!
Anyway the moral of all this is make sure all the oil is OUT.

na its half way up the engine and sits in the upright position so you just slacken it off let the excess drain off 1st

why not just undo the sump plug and drain it into her indoors washing up bowl, i wouldn't imagine a punp out would remove all the little bits if **** from the bottom of the sump

maybe he does not want to remove the belly panel which is probs 1/2 hours work on ya back,

but i think i would still do it properly but thats me

some kind tw@ cut a square out of the placstic bit so you can get at the plug for oil change time

dose make life easy but not the way Id go!

My drive is all gravel and not very stable for jacking etc. So I use the vacuum pump on my other car (volvo V70) and it works great.

I did the change this weekend and I found that the dip stick does not drain all of the oil, but only a little was left judging from the colour once refilled.

I will try using the oil filter centre hole next time, as it should come from a very low position in the sump.

One question for you gents, I used the crossford filter kit and the replacement 'o' rings were a little loose for the two smaller rings. Do they shrink when they are heated?
