Well after my positive start with the replacement of the air bags and a bloody good clean up the new P38 was looking good, when I bought the car I instantly noticed that it was very slow to change up the gears, sorry should have said its an auto, any way I thought it would just be the gearbox filter and fluid needing a change.....Wrong! done the filter / fluid change and its still the same, very slow to pick up speed and stays in the gears far to long. I've also just noticed it doesn't register 1st or park??
Any way did some looking around and found 2 plastic pipes coming up the bulkhead form the gearbox area, these pipes have a bend on them that suggest they go onto the intake manifold but I can see any connections?
I have also notice a little black box with Diesel Tec 2000 on it located on the NS bulkhead next to a small fuel filter, the fuel filter has the outlet pipe missing and the diesel tec box has 2 pipes on it?
Any ideas or suggestions please?

Small fuel filter is possibly the EGR vac valve filter normal to have an open end. Pipes are breathers and don't connect to anything. Other thing is possibly a tuning box does it have wires to it?

Is it stuck in (the amusingly named) sport mode? The other thing is that the throttle adapts to your driving style, so if you're using lots of throttle to get places quicker, it could be factoring this in to how long it's holding gears and trying its best to extract maximum performance.

If you disconnect the battery for a while then reconnect, it should clear the adaptive memory. Might be interesting to see what difference that makes?

No adaptive memory on a diesel, only on the petrol gearbox ECUs.

Thanks for identifying the disconnected pipes Wammers, one less thing to scratch my head over.
I may have been expecting a bit more get up and go than is really available from a DSE but this is definitely not stuck in Sports mode, the sports mode does offer that little more acceleration but to be honest it does feel like its got some sort of issue with the auto box.
Do any members live close to Wincham / Northwich that would mind test driving it to compare against their DSE ?

Try sticking some Lucas transmission fix in it. It has been known to work wonders.

Also remember that the accelerator has a very long travel so that you have good control traversing bogs in Patagonia.

Nothing really happens beneath 2000 rpm. Try giving some welly. A 2.5 litre diesel is never going to make a couple of tons plus that lively but you will give some boy racers a surprise. Unfortunately you won't see the look of surprise on their faces and will have instead to enjoy the feeling of making smoke like Achilles in the Battle of the River Plate.

The diesels I tried were all pretty sluggish to be honest, especially when compared to the petrols.

A 2.5 litre diesel is always going to be a little less nippy than a 4.0 or 4.6 litre petrol engine pulling the same weight of car. If they were as fast and with it's 28-30 mpg on the motorway. Everybody would have one. :):)

yep you must use all the throttle to the floor and it picks up really well.
anything less than say 1/2 throttle and you will coast along.

Maybe I just had a good one...my '99 DSE was very perky when prodded....go on give it a poke, you could be surprised..!!

Mine is ECU chipped and is pretty quick when needed. Respect for the amount of titty it drinks if the power is used keeps the foot light. :D:D

Yeah point taken about the power to weight ratio, to be fair if I plant my foot to the floor it does pick its tail up.
I just feel it stays in gears too long, like it could shift up but doesn't want to.
Does anyone have experience of the issue with it not going into park or 1st? it's as if the gearstick travel has slack in it and does not go to each extreme of the movement range.
Is there any adjustment on the cable or linkage i need to check?

You can adjust the lever on the side of the box, likewise the xyz switch which gives the becm lever position info. its in rave.

Hi Ben.
I'm only about five miles from you, if you drop me a PM with a phone number I might be able to pop over this weekend & have a look for you, I'm not promising anything as I have a shed load on but I'll try my best, got a Nanocom too so I can plug that in if needed.
