Hi folks
A bit of diagnosis from the great and knowledgable would be appreciated (again).

Just home after being recovered along with my '98 P38 4.6 Auto. Driving home I heard a noise (bag of spanners being rattled) over the radio. Turned radio off, opened window and slowed down, just about at the same point Rangie stopped. Stopped dead in the road but engine still running.

Recovery guy had an interesting job loading onto the trailer (and an even more interesting job unloading). It was clear that passenger side front wheel was locked solid. At first drivers side seemed to turn but then locked whilst being winched.

I'm guessing chief suspect is front diff? did try, briefly, in both low & high range to see if I had any drive (was in middle of road!). Felt like there was drive from back wheels but couldn't overcome whatever was locking fronts.

Any other guesses? If it is the diff how difficult are they to change on a driveway (and how displeased will bank manager be?)

before I go fetch another diff, is there anything else it could realistically be. I ruled out other parts mainly because it's only the front axle locking up, seems to be drive to rear wheels.

Also had a quick look on ebay - some are described as 4 pin others 2 pin. What's the difference (later model?) and are they interchangable? If they are interchangable any preference for one above the other?

Would be nice to get under there at weekend and do it as a single job rather than take old unit off and then wait for another.

Wammers - notice you are local to me. Any specifics breakers you would recommend?

Almost defanatly the front diff
But to rule out vc get both front wheels off the ground and wheels should turn by hand with small effort
Now 4.6 had 4pin diffs in rear to deal with the extra power but any diff will fit anywere
There was storys about late p38 4.6s having 2pin rears from factory .They obviously didnt last long!

Thanks guys, so worth buying a replacement diff and taking the risk. Will check the VC.
From what I read I'll need to undo the front wheels/hubs to give enough room to pull the drive shafts out of the diff. Which gets me wondering if I should look for replacement shafts just in case........

It took a combination of sliders knocked under the front wheels, raising the truck bed as high as possible and, once the back wheels where on the ground, driving the truck slowly forward. Where getting to the point of using his winch anchored to a tree!

Don't be sorry I was laughing and he was a decent guy. But you should have seen his face when he first tried to load up and realised the fronts where solid :)

Think he knew it was going to be an easy job at that point.......
