I was under my 1999 TD5 Discovery earlier having a look at various stuff, and saw this (pics taken). Is there supposed to be a plug in there, and what is the the hole for?

Please can anyone help/worry me/put my mind at ease? :)

Cheers

If thats your gearbox, looks like a drain plug, miknes an auto so im not sure what the bottom of a manual box looks like.

thats for your wading plug to go in - not blanked off for normal use and was not supplied with your car when new. Not used on the road

What the man is saying quite correctly is that is the way it should be unless you are going to drive into water more than about a foot deep.

If you are planning on doing that, buy a wading plug to fill the hole.

Thanks very much guys.....it is an auto, yes, but that puts my mind at rest at least!

One more thing ... if you do buy a wading plug, I think it is best NOT to leave it in all the time. The regular duck-imitators will let you know what's best practice.
