decided to change the water pump today as suggested on here.

disaster struck:eek: when 2 of the bolts holding water pump decided not to play the game and snapped (original pump) its the 2 on the far right when you look at it..

have tried heating them up and using an easy-out which snapped... has this happened to anyone before. if so what did u do ?

and if anyone gonna be in north devon tommorow and fancies giving us a hand or just for a laugh pm me

Have they broken flush, or is there enough left to get a pair of small Stillsons or the "Wheel type" 1/2" square drive stud extractor on to it??
Can't quite remember, do these bolts go through the front cover into the block or are is the front cover tapped to take them??
Last resort may have to be front cover removal if all else fails..don't forget to fit a new gasket and oil seal if that's the case.

Feel for ya Bud.

OH sh*t!
I had the similar thing happen to me accept it was 2 bolts holding the exhaust manifold on to the block both bolts on cylinder 6 had snapped in the block ! It was the loudest popping thing on the road, i had to take the exhaust off turbo etc... managed to drill one out but the other one was too hard to access so i ended up welding another bolt to it, got it in the end was a right ball ache though, !!

how did you heat them up?

if you can get something on them, get a kettle of boiling water, poor it over and try rocking em back and forth

cobalt drill bit and cutting paste, slow

With an easy out in there which is very hard, I am not sure the drill would go where you want without a jig. even with a jig it night not cut an easy out.

We made a jig for doing the bmw 3 series 6 cylinder exhaust manifold studs as they go quite often, done two now with the manifold on the head and the engine still in the car.

4.6 v8 engine had to remove radiator (oil cooler atf cooler swung up out the way) heat with oxyacetalyne rocked studs but still no joy stud extractor no joy drilled one and easy out snapped, think gonna have to weld on some threaded rod got about half inch of stud exposed as it was only the head of the bolt that snapped

Try a small pair of Stillsons first. Be careful with oxy acetylene the surrounding aluminium could turn into a blob!!
I would remove the front cover to gain more access if the stillsons fail.

problem with taking front cover off is that the two bolts go through wate pump and the front cover into block...

managed to drill and tap them

Just purely out of a tooling/jig related geekyness, do you have any photo's or details of your jig you'd be willing to share?

cheers,
jt

Agreed Rob, but at least there will be a fair bit of bolt skang sticking out to have a go at and they are only M6/M8 or unified equivalents (Can't remember which), not as though they are M20 or so. If they have not been removed beforehand, they will have lock & seal on the threads and after the initial "Break" should come out easily.

shame someone's phone had no signal, bideford morrisons breakfast for me for a laugh 160 mile round trip
