Hi all,

Off to view this P38 on Tue:

Land Rover Range Rover 2.5 DT 4dr

2 questions:

1- Is it a bit 'Underpigeon'? Obviously the 'Sport' badges and heinous LED strips would have to come straight off, but will I be able to live with those rear lights?

2- What should I be looking for at this mileage in terms of common faults? Clearly reading a buyers guide is the answer here, but Im just wondering if there's anything specific that starts to rear its head around 150K miles?

Its alot underpidgeon. Which means the question has to asked: was the owner doing "underpidgeon" things rather than works they should have carried out or were they so on top of the servicing etc that they had to find things to do?Then of course did they do everything well? The cosmetics dont look like a bodge in fairness.

Looks tidy for the year and mileage but why aren't there any photo's of the interior? As you say, the led strips and badges will have to come off and the sport side vents look nasty, you could always colour code them so they don't stick out. You can replace those crappy rear lights with originals from the bay of e.

Look for any evidence of coolant in the drivers footwell (damp carpets and dried coolan deposits - heater matrix o-rings have a tendancy to go and they are behind the dash, not impossible to do but awkward and time comsuming.

Check the hevac display for the book and ! symbol - blend motors can seize with age and are an utter pain in the rear to replace.

Check the EAS is fully working, select the different ride heights to see if it goes up and down ok. When you get there, if it's been stood a while and leaning on one side or on it's bump stops then either the airbags are going or there is a leak in the valve block.

When you take it for a test drive and once it's upto temp. find somewhere safe and turn off, wait a few seconds and try to restart it. If it cranks for a while then it has the hot start problem (very common on the bmw lump). There is a fix for around £20-£30. Listen out for any groaning or any untoward noise coming from the gearbox or diffs.

Have a look through the history to see when all the oils were replaced, importantly the gearbox, transfer box and diffs. If they haven't been done then get them done asap. Ask if there is a tuning box on it. Although it ups the power it will destroy the gearbox. If it has one and it's not been on long you may get away with it, if however it's been on for a while then walk away or budget for a new box.

Isnt the rear an L322 Overskin, im sure i saw a video of this on Youtube, which might be a little nasty to remove. I dont think people should mess with a P38 and make it something its not, wheels and tints in my opinion should be as far as it goes. Price seems a little high for the age and mileage though.

How very true. Does the little black box always fix the hot start problem though?

Thanks for the help so far, pretty much the response I expected re the aesthetics!

I also dislike the L322 lower tailgate skin, shonky rear lights, vents in the wings and LED strips in the bumper. As I said, I'd remove as much as I could immediately, and I can't imagine a new lower tailgate/ lights would be hard to come by. Vents in the front wings are more of a challenge, but there's little on the car that isn't fairly easy to reverse.

The main reason Im interested is that it's diesel, manual, has leather and appears to be in very good nick, therefore ticking all my P38 boxes.

The sale price would need to come much closer to £2K to fit my budget anyway, so I wouldn't entertain the near £3K ad price.

If anyone in the Luton area fancies taking a look at it with me, your help would be greatly appreciated. Im gonna view/ drive on Tues afternoon.

Three weeks ago I paid £2k for a very tidy DSE Auto with less miles than that. Unmolested, that car is worth no more than £2K, but probably nearer £1500 in it's current state.

I would walk away, its well over priced, i looked at a lot that before i found my DSE auto, i paid less than 2k for it, its a W reg had 90k on the clock and only 2 owners, the last had it ten years. Since iv had it ive put new shocks and air springs on, discs n pads, four new tyres and lot of other things thats on going but i like getting my hands dirty messing about with it and Love it, but if you dont then dont get a P38, but if you do Good luck and hope you find a nice one.
