Evening all

I am currently contemplating obtaining a set of off road wheels and tyres and maybe having a go at green laning when better weather arrives

Obviously being a newcomer to the Discovery I am thinking of getting a set of 2nd hand 17" LR alloys and some off road tyres ( good choice at 17" rim I believe yes, no? )

If you are running such a set up which route have you chosen wheel and tyre wise?

Cheers

Sorry, are you the bloke posting threads all over the place at the mo? I have lost track!
Anyway, to be serious, if you get a set of ATs, Goodyear or General Grabbers you'll be able to go most places without having to spend time changing wheels.

They'd be OK. Ours do mostly just that sort of driving and as our tyre fitter said the other day when I actually had to replace one (Goodyear) "they never wear out!"

Which model are you using? I have read that D3's are " quite capable off road " on road tyres?

Not sure where you would draw the line between on/off etc though?

You used to get abused for asking about tyres on Landyzone, but i happen to like tyres! Ahem.
A set of Grabber at3 is a great all round choice and on 17s would be fab. Get standard size. Great on motorway and on muddy tracks. They lasted 30k on our l200 truck!

The D3 is fine on its factory tyres if it's just green lanes you are doing. Green lanes aren't pay and play locations, so should be driven slowly and with care. If the lane is bad enough to need AT tyres, then it really shouldn't be driven at all.

My D3 was fitted with Pirelli Scorpion ATRs, which were brilliant. I had the standard size tyre, on the standard 18" wheel. It was lovely on the motorway or on a green lane. They last about 30K miles too.

intil you come across wet grass, I find the D3 is terrible with road tyres on wet grass, probably due to its weight. You need a tread that will cut through to the surface below with some lugs to pull it through. And the terrain response on wet grass is useless, cutting out wheel spin just as you get some momentum. I have had to switch it off to cover a slight incline while travelling in a field.
