Off-road tyres

hiya...when asking about off-road tyres to fit 195/15" steels i was recomended colway tyres..
i've been told these are no longer available..and other models are in bigger sizes (205/15)

anyone got any ideas where i should be looking..?

Just search an online tyre retailer for 195/80 R15, 205/80 R15 or 215/75 R15 - plenty available from remoulds upto BFG and General.

I'm using Colway A/T in 215/75 R15 - excellent in all conditions including 4" of snow where I am. Sadly they are now out of business, but are available on ebay and have now been bought out by Markgum (Spelling??)

I'll second this. Got them on mine, perfect!

will the 205/80..and 215/75 fit on these freelander 15" steel wheels and will they fit my freelander without any alterations..?

They should both be ok as the online tyre calculator shows the cicumference of both sizes being around same size mine (215/70 on 16" @ 707mm)

(215/75 on 15" @ 704mm)
(205/80 on 15" @ 709mm)

The two millimeter larger won't make any difference.

The larger sizes work ok on my Freelander without any alterations. It has even made my speedometer more accurate according to my SatNav.

I'll also second that, the speedometers in freebys seem to be a little bit out. You're going slower than you think.

I have read that its only advisable to go up one tyre size. So from 195's you should only go to 205's not the 215's.

Also, FWIW im using Falken At/ta tyres in 195's. About £48 supply and delivered from Camskill. Last set had about 35,000 miles from them. Good grip in the mud and snow and virtually no difference on road (maybe a tad in the wet).

215/80/15's fit a treat, 28.5"(725mm), lifts the car 1" over standard.
Got Kumho KL78 AT's on mine.

hiya..in reply to my questions....i notice that all recomended tyres (205 &215) are A/T's

as my original plan was to fit snow/ice/mud tyres on to some 15" steel wheels i've been given and to use then as drastic winter wheels and off-road muddy field stuff...(i live in the pennines in lancs) Would M/T's be a better bet than A/T's..??
any advice is gratefull..

Suppose it depends how often you'd be changing your wheels. Are you planning on swapping between 2 sets? You'll notice quite a difference driving mud terrains on tarmac, will lose a bit of top speed and acceleration and will have a lower mpg.

I stuck on a set of Toyo 785 all-terrains in 215/80/15 - good chunky tread and give about an inch lift. I use these on the road too, but they give great grip on snow and fields.

yes...i plan to swap between the 2 sets...the 16" alloys that came with the car..and the 15" steels i was given...

the 15" would be specific for snow/ice/mud

in that case if you're going to swap between wheelsets, i'd go with an all terrain tyre that you can fit the studs into. My General Grabbers have holes specifically for inserting studs (available seperately) so you'd have the best of three worlds. Road / Off road / Ice and snow
