Oem sat nav question

2000 p38 4.6 vogue

guys i have an alpine sat nav system fitted under the rear carpet in the spare wheel well, it works on the oem screen, is this the standard sat nav system or an aftermarket one ?

its not standard, dont think the screen is either!

cheers, did the rangie have its own sat nav system then ?

if it was aftermarket how comes the screen fits the dash so well

there ya go, confirmed!!! notice the buttons on the left of the screen and the sat nav was in the cubby box or boot with the cd changer on oem equipment!!!

nice one, well mines defo not oem, maybe the alpine system at the time had a facia that fitted the rangie, thats maybe why it looks a very good fit.

ah well people dont rate the range rover sat nav so hopefully this alipne system is better

All the built in sat nav systems I have seen are pretty poor as they don't have map update facilities. That might be OK in the UK where new roads are as rare as hens teeth:doh: but here in France you will find the sat nav tells you that you are traveling across fields a lot of the time as new roads are constantly being built and they do not appear in the sat nav's map reference info Still the P38 is a 4 X 4 LOL
The last in car satnav I had used a DVD as it's mapping source, a new DVD was €200 a pop and the stealer could not tell me if the info was up to date or not. Have to buy to find out as "it's special order":doh::doh::doh: Cheaper to buy a new Tom Tom!

i moght have said this a few times but a car pc is the way forward!!!

Heh, my TomTom regularly thinks I'm in fields ... A1 round the M62 junction, M1/A1 further up, almost the whole North bridge section of Doncaster ...

No worries though, 'cos my TT is on a PDA and didn't actually cost me anything .. though it has the latest maps (Connects direct to TTHome) they're still over a year out of date, but then I used to keep a road atlas for 10 years or so ...

well here is hoping this alpine system is a decent one, i will try and aquire copies of the sat nav disc updates and see how i get on using it.

i had an audi tt with oem sat nav and it was useless, telling me i was offroad when i was on the motorway etc, made me get lost many times till i eventually gave up on it.

whats the advantage of a car pc apart from storing many music and video files

with a car pc you can have various different sat nav systems on there, you can have mobile broadband so there is very little chance of getting lost!! it will do everything you can do in the home and car in one unit(obviously you havr to have usb gps reciever, bluetooth dongle and usb broadband adapter) you can buy ready made kits or you can build your own from basically whatever pc bits you have kicking around!!

you can spend loads or very little and you can tailor it to the car/owner preferance.

have a look for centrafuse, its the leading front end software and its quite impressive!!!

The old Alpine sat navs are not the greatest. I have one. I find a tom tom much easier to use.

The alpine does not have postcode facility. You have to input the address via the remote.

sounds like fun if i had the time to do all this but i dont have the time so ill just have to work with what i have

its yerself from ta, hi, i dont travel enough to buy a sat nav and so i want to try and make the best of what is fitted to the rangie and hope its serves me well enough

Mine works fine. Kind of use it in emergency and every now and then. Have you found the brain boxes for the screens yet.??

nope but ive got the all screens working when i play a dvd movie in the front, the head unit was connected to the tv tuner boxes so the monitors needed to be on the tv channel and then use the tv tuner remote to flick to video and then the screens play the dvd video from the head unit, i also can get the 5 tv station and the vhs player working too

i thinks the vhs player will be going though

hi mason can you tell me what alpine system you have as im after an updated disc

I'm using the NVE-N055PV sat nav with the NVS-HB06 software.

have a look there. there is some contact numbers you can call alpine on!

also, put the disk in your pc and find the maps, find out the file extension. maybe if it matches one of the other formats that other sat nav systems use then you can put an updated map in and re burn the disk, prolly also add voices and points of interest!!!

if your not familiar with all that malarky copy the disk and post it to me and i'll have a go and post it back!

my disc is the NVS-HB05, DOES THIS MEANS YOURS IS A 2006 DISC, IF SO ITS NOT REALLY GOING TO BE worth asking for a copy of yours unless its a lot newer than mine.

yeah i can mess about with pc stuff myself thanks mate, ill give this a shot and see what happens. thanks for your help

MASON where is your alpine sat nav speaker, mine is behind the wee bit of cloth to the left, the speaker is faulty, can i just replace it with any small speaker that fits in there

Must say that the installation looks a nice neat job. The majority of OEM ststems fitted to the P38's were Carins.
Personally, I use TomTom which I find to be more than adequate for the purpose of getting from A to B with adequate updates available online if I need them.
I never cease to be amazed though by the number of people that have the satnav switched on for a journey that they do regularly..it seems to be paranoid!
Whilst the days of navigating by the stars has gone and as a previous poster has said...how often did you buy a new book of maps???
Whilst the benifits of GPS are brilliant..I think that te idea of driving and having to look at a screen to tell you where you are going is to say the least..distracting.
