I drove my friend's Defender 300TDi tonight and it has a tweeting noise when you press the accelerator pedal....even very gentle application of power and it sounds like a bird is trapped in the engine bay.
As soon as you release the accelerator it stops. The noise is not there if you rev the engine when stationary, only when driving along.
I have no idea what this is. Could it be an air leak in one of the turbo hoses?

It could be a lack of oil in the gearbox. Does he know when it was last changed or topped up? Can he / you pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from? If you lift out one of the panels under your seats you should be able to tell whether or not it is coming from the gearbox.

If not you're UJ's on the prop shafts (as Boydy suggested) are the best things to check. Grease them up and check for slack!

yep mine does this and its the belt....if you spray a little wd40 on it it stops for a while.....must get round to changing it....

Thanks for the replies/advice.
I checked the propshafts and the front prop universal joint (gearbox end) was knackered.
Now replaced and the tweeting is no more!
