Hi Guys - I've been struggling to identify an odd squealing noise coming from the front near side of my French registered Disco 1 300 TDI. I thought it was a wheel bearing but having had that changed twice the noise still persists. I've renewed shock absorbers (no change) brake pads and discs(no change) checked diff oil gearbox oil, but still have this noise. It is especially annoying as it only starts after about 30 mins driving saving something warms up and expands. Therefore whenever I take it to a garage the squeak is never audible making me think I am going mad! But my wife just drove to the airport and half way through the 80 minute journey she reported loud squealing/squeaking. It sounds like the noise brakes on a bicycle make. Any suggestions what it may be? Thanks Dan.

Slipping belt?

And welcome to lz! :)

I think we need more info to help you.

As @Turboman says above, it could be a slipping belt, a known issue with Tdi's

it could also be alternator bearings, or P/S pump, or....

does it do it when coasting?, engine on/off? ; speed dependent? etc.... going round corners?, does it stop if you apply the brakes?, either hard, or just gently..... or ????

try any and all permutations in an attempt to isolate a more precise issue.....and report back...

( and if you try coasting engine off, be aware that vacuum assistance for the brakes will be used up RAPIDLY!)

And Welcome, too:)

Thanks guys - well I went for a 20 minute drive tonight and it only made the noise right at the end, as usual as if it needs something to heat up before it starts squeaking. The noise is constant regardless of engine revs, so guessing it is running gear related. If I tweak the steering or touch the brakes, it stops - essentially mostly making the noise when going straight ahead. I'll pluck up courage to turn off engine tomorrow and see if that affects it, if I can find a quiet bit of straight road. But it only seems to make the noise at higher speeds - eg above 50 mph.

A further note - on testing on the motorway the noise persists with steering input but if I just touch tiebreakers it stops immediately. It persists even in neutral at 60 mph. So guessing it must be a brake catching?

Know the feeling with undiagnosed noises, my '91 D1 has a sorta random 'squark' sometimes but seems that it's only when turning left & transition from flat road / junctions to uphill o_O
Although with mine believe it's either the Bilstein steering damper (has a dry bearing in the sliding cover:confused:) or something dodgy going on in the drivers front hub area (swivel bearings???)

Faarknose

Rich.

Ps.sorry I'm not being helpful

Brake squeal, or even a piece of grit riding against the disc behind the brake shield. Try prising the pads in and out with a small bar, and clean up and lightly oil the pins that go through the back of the pad.
In very bad cases a thin copper shim behind the pad will deal.
