Morning All, I have just joined up to see if I can get some help on my other half’s freelander 1! We were out with he dogs the other day when the car started to jump/misfire while under load, clocks were flicking on and off and as was the music, managed to track this to the positive terminal being loose (clutch was recently replaced so I guess it wasn’t correctly fitted back on) However as soon as this happened, it must have shorted something somewhere as now the car will not turn off when removing the key! The engine still runs and the dash stays active! Starts no problem, but will not just turn off. I'm guessing there is a problem within the starter system somewhere, but I can’t find anything at the moment, has anyone come across this before? This car is becoming the bane of my life, she decided to remove the roof the other day to clean, and she then broke a clip that holds the roof on....!

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Just to add to this, the immobiliser light is also not active and remote central locking is also down. Couldn't find any blown fuses under the dash or in the engine bay, is there possibly a 3rd im missing?

I should mention its a 1.8 petrol. I have also noticed since this happened, when the engine is running the aircon pump in the passenger foot well seems to be running constantly.

Well I should first point out the forum etiquette is to find the introduction area and say hello etc there...

But as I don't really go in and say hello to anyone.first posting.............

Right onto your freelander problems. I would first suspect the ignition switch for the problems with not switching off. Possibly nothing to do with the loose terminal or the clutch being replaced.

Do the dash lights stay lit if you stall the engine? If so that would also explain the immobiliser light not being active as it thinks the key is still in and turned to the run position.it would also prevent the remote central locking from working.

The air con pump running is possibly a seperate issue. I think there is only a fan in the footwell not a pump. ( but I could be wrong as mine doesn't have a/c)

Did you get the clutch done at Mr Clutch? Loose stuff and problems afterwards is usually a sign of their work.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. The only dash lights I get are the oil pressure light when the engine is stalled, and the handbrake light. Gauges work as they should. No the clutch was replaced at a garage owned/shared by her granddad so no worries there I hope! You may be right with the fan just in the foot well, I can fire the aircon up and the pump then kicks in.

Thank for the help, I will ensure I do an introduction! Im ex REME mechanic so im used to working on some old land rovers unfortunately!

No Alt/Battery light?

The thing that you can hear in the foot well is the booster fan. The aircon pump is bolted to the engine.
This fault could be a relay that has stuck on due to arcing caused by the intermittent power loss.

This is what I was expecting, ill pull the relay tonight when I get back. The fan is only running when the engine is running at the moment.

Yes no battery light, the car is charging fine but not showing a battery light when 'off'.

Do you think its worth swapping the ignition barrel or strip and clean?

Thanks again

No ignition light means power is always on the exciter wire of the alternator. Take it off and check. Should be easy to chase the power thru.

Particularly with Rave.

Likely to flatten battery quickly with risk of fire :(.

First unplug the ignition barrel...... This will confirm or poo poo my diagnosis! If unplugging it switches of dash lights then replace it?

Was the battery light working before the clutch was done?

Yes, all was working well before the clutch was done as far as I can remember!

I will take the connection off the barrel this evening and also check the power at the exciter wire.

Just out of precaution I have been disconnecting the battery while not in use!!

Afternoon all, sorry for slow reply to the ideas I have been given I just haven't had a chance to have a look until now! So it's not the ignition switch on the barrel and it's also not either of the large relays under the engine bay fuse box.

I have now noticed if I pull the fuel cut off switch in the box under the steering wheel (fuse6 I think) the dash comes back as it should and the immobiliser light starts flashing as it should! Is there a fuel shut of solenoid located in the engine bay that may be stuck open hence not cutting off?? I can't find anything that stands out......!

Bloody freelander!!!

Thanks

Is sounds like you have a bad connection on the main fuse box. They are a collection of multi connectors where various harnesses join the box. Try wiggling the wiring below the fuse box.

hi

this may sound a daft question but u say it was fine before the clutch was done

it hasn't been power washed by any chance has it, or any wires pulled or pinched somewhere when the gearbox was removed

just a thought
