hiya guys

so sorry to ask such a dumb question what did they do to the freelander to update it to the system obd2, was it just an updated ecu or is it alot more complicated than that please

just curiuos

i know mine isnt is the testing point plug different on the OBD2

thanks as always

gary

Its the same plug - my 1998 Freelander has the same one as my 2005 model but 1998 is not OBD2 compliant where as the 2005 model is. Sorry cannot say what was changed to make the TD4 OBD2 compliant.

hiya

thanks for that, i was just very curious of what and how complicated the changes were .

am i right in saying that the freelander before was a OBD1 system or a completely different system

thanks again

The compliance involves the protocol to talk, as well as the understanding of where data is. The software in the computer would need changed. But the warning is that clomplance varies. Some offer the bare minimum. Others do more. Perhaps the wiring is slightly different.

hiya

many thanks for that.

i contacted a land rover main dealer to ask them before i posted on here as i couldnt remember what year the obd2 came into affect

he sent me the following and where to look on the rave cd, it looks like its compliant but i know you guys are the experts here

didnt want to go out a buy something like a scangauge mpg monitor, scangauge are saying they dont become OBD2 compliant until 2004 and land rover say mine is and its a 2002.

another thing ive seen on ebay are numerous items ie.bluetooth etc

shame i could find someone with a OBD2 tester/etc that i could plug into see if it worked and was wondering if there was anyone out there that may allow me to plug something into my diagnostic plug to see if it is OBD2 compliant please before i went out and bought something like a scangauge please

hope im not being rude in asking

as always a massive thanks

i do like making things difficult :confused::confused:

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
4.28 FREELANDER 02MY
DIAGNOSTIC SOCKET
DESCRIPTION
General
The diagnostic socket is located behind the centre console, and is accessible from the
drivers footwell on NAS vehicles, or the passenger footwell on all other vehicle derivatives.
The socket is compliant with SAE directive J1962 standard, and allows attachment of
TestBook, T4, or any other suitable diagnostic software tool. It allows detailed fault diagnosis
checks to be carried out on the vehicle via an ISO 9141 K Line.
OPERATION
General
Feed from the positive battery terminal (C0192) is supplied to fusible link 4 of the engine
compartment fuse box (C0632) on an R wire. Fusible link 4 (C0574) is connected to fuse 14
of the passenger compartment fuse box (C0587) by an NW wire. Fuse 14 (C0583) provides
a constant battery feed to the diagnostic socket (C0040) on a P wire. The diagnostic socket
(C0040) is earthed on a B wire.
The diagnostic socket (C0040) communicates with the following systems and components
via the K line on K wires:
The instrument pack (C0230).
The Central Control Unit (CCU) (C0429).
The ABS ECU (C0500) (01MY vehicles only).
The ABS ECU (C0501) (02 MY vehicles only).
The SRS DCU (C0256).
The cruise control ECU (KV6 ROW vehicles only) (C0239).
The Automatic Transmission Control Unit (ATCU) (Td4 and KV6 vehicles only)
(C0932).
The Engine Control Module (ECM) (KV6 NAS vehicles only) (C0331).
The Engine Control Module (ECM) (KV6 ROW vehicles only) (C0371).
The ECM (K1.8 vehicles only) (C0913).
The ECM (Td4 vehicles only) (C0603).
The Fuel Burning Heater (FBH) (Td4 vehicles only) (C0925).
The diagnostic socket (C0040) also communicates with the immobilisation ECU (C0059) via
the DS-2 bus on a K wire.

bless you for that at least i now know that 100% my 2002 td4 is not obd2 compliant.

before i read your post i done alot of research trying to read up alot and thanks to your links been reading through them as well.

i did get an email to say that i should get live data info only so for example if i bought a scangauge 2 it should there fore give me the mpg reading i want but wont give me the other info.

just cannot find a dedicated mpg monitor , only the scangauge.

i do see alot of info about using laptops with seems like a bluetooth obd2 dongle and was wondering what one do you think is the best please, there seems to be so many on ebay and alot from china.

if there was some pc software that i could use with a suitable bluetooth dongle/lead that would be great to see if i can just read my mpg, so that i dont have to fill up my fuel tank every time then having to wait until ive used it before i get a reading.

my other reasoning is that i can alter the synergy 2 and different speeds so i can then get a live mpg data so i can adjust settings speed accordingly to see what works the best .

thanks again for all your great help and if anyone can recommend a good pc software and lead or bluetooth dongle please i would really appreciate it

Just replied to your pm.

The hawkeye won't give mpg. You'd be better to fill your tank, drive it, then fill again. Then work out the mpg from the mileage between fill ups. Trip computers are never precise. The only way to get precise live data is to get data direct from the engine. Few aftermarket products will do this. Even those built into cars are never precise.
