Guys, have searched LZ Forum and YouTube but can't find answer on this and still scratching head...

Have rebuilt both swivels/stub axles/hubs et al. All new swivel balls, refurbished housings, new Timkin bearings, Railko bushes, upper and lower pins, upper shims and pin pad, stub axles and seals/gasket all round; it's all new and spotlessly clean [note, no cheapo Britpart components...]

Both sides have assembled cleanly and pre-loaded correctly, but the offside has vertical play only to the lower swivel pin and I don't know why as all the components are correct to year/model with new pins and bearing. There was no vertical play in swivel before refurb'.

Anyone else come across this before? Have I been a donkey and done something wrong? All help greatly received

if theres play theres too many shims or youve missed the bush thrust washer out, presumably you check preload with the seal not fitted

Thanks James, down to one upper pin shim and the pin pad/thrust washer in place. Seal not in place when checked preload. I think I'll drain one shot trow morning, slacken everything off, reassemble/preload and recheck for any vertical lower pin area play. This is an odd one...

you cant have had preload if there was play in bottom bearing

Right...

1. I'll get the embarrassment over and done with first, vertical play in the lower swivel pin area can logically mean only one thing...wait for it...yes, I've been a cock of the first order, "I forgot to fit the lower swivel pin tapered bearing...!" What, I hear you say...o_O

2. an incredible 134 of you buggers have viewed this thread and only two good fellows replied, @jamesmartin and @Al2O3; thanks James, thanks Al.

3. as for youe 134 buggers, you're either thinking "I really want to know the fault here in case I too make a future cock up...", or, "I know what v8250's done, but I'm not going tell him...:p"

This evening stripped the whole o/s/f assembly from drive member to swivel, recleaned every bloomin' part, only needed two new gaskets, re-assembled...swivel thrust shimmed to within a micron of its life, rear seal-gasket-st/st plate and screws fitted, driveshaft re-lubed and back in, new hub gasket, hub, seal plate, bolts recleaned, new hub/disc assembly, seal, bearings, thrust washer, 52mm nut, lock tab, 52mm lock nut, end float checked...it's lovely...lock tab tabbed over, HD drive member and gasket + shim and circlip. All thread locked and torqued up; job done :D

It's been a busy evening so thought I'd celebrate with a Waitrose Beouf Bourguignon, rustic sourdough bread and a hefty glass of Calvet...followed by Cherry Tart and Custard; mmmm ;)

So, should anyone have cranial malfunction as above, now you know...don't forget the lower swivel pin bearing

If we're honest, we've all done something similar at one time or another.
