novice needs advise

Hello all,

I am looking to buy a second hand 96 2.5L defender. I have had very little to do with landys before but have always admired them and heard good things about them.

Could anyone provide me with some tips on what to look out for when buying a secondhand landy?

Also, when test driving the beast i might buy i noticed a clunking noise shortly after i let the clutch out. is this normal? I have been told so, but seek more reassurance.

dont forget rust in the inner wings, rear wheel arches, rear floor, footwells, headlights.

clunky gearboxes
difficulty in getting into 2nd or 3rd gears
leaky diffs

rust
and all the usual car stuff like smoke, noises etc.

shoot - yu sed defender - ignore most of the rust - except
rust in the bulkhead
rust in the chassis
corrosion (not necessarily rust) in doors, sills

all the other stuff above.

There shouldn't be a clunk on taking up the drive. If there is, it's likely to be tha A Frame ball joint - about £30 to fix.

or something else with the transmission - tell him to get it fixed and you'll pay him the £30, else there is a danger you will have a tranny or gearbox problem on your hands. If only £30 then no problem!

go fer a 200 or 300 tdi easier tae work on n jist is good
