'nother freelander - hill decent not working

Just bought a second early freelander (dont ask!!) - ABS works perfect but no response from hill decent - no red light, no green light, no functionio ! Any known causes? I suspect sensors are al good as abs is ok ?

hi,(see my post over your vib damper) i had a bit of trouble with mine last year & just gave up and accepted that it would't work,one day i decided to put new pads on the front & guess what, hill decent working with dashboard lights

Pull up the gaiter around the bottom of the gearlever,you will probably find the wires to the HDC switch broken off.Reconnect them and it should work.

I agree with eightinavee, sounds like a broken cable or switch if you're getting no lights on the instrument display. Check the cables to the switch and also check the switch.
Nije, I know you said "don't ask" but that's like putting a child in a candy shop and saying "don't touch". Please tell, why a second "early" Freelander?

i have the same problem. when i turn ignition on the lights come on, but when i engage the hdc switch, nothing!

eightinavee is right about the wires. Have just whipped off the gaiter and...hey presto! two free wires! Both wires had parted company from the micro switch. .5 mis, a dod o solder and voila! a working hdc. Wonder how much a garage would have charged

Can anyone tell me why my HDC amber light comes on when I`m sitting in traffic,! happened several times on way home from work and wonder if its another LR balls up. Your advice would be appreciated

Don't know if this will help anyone. If you extend the wires so that the connector sits on the metalwork, then this will take the weight off the wires. Also tape the wires to the lower section of the gear lever (Below the switching unit) I've tried it. will let you all know if it was a waste of time or not.

As far as happy ending are concerned, I'm not so sure. Just as I get the hdc working, the fan now only works on settings 3 and 4. 1 and 2 not working. Oh well, back to the drawing board...

Yes it does work,its just that I was too lazy to add it to my earlier post.

I know this post is a bit old, but I recently aquired a V reg 1.8 XI freelander with no working Hill Descent. Having looked under the gaiter, it looks like the 2 wires were deliberately cut. Before I reconnect them, can anyone think of a reason why they may have been cut in the first place (for instance, could it have been to cure a known fault?)? Many thanks

I wouldnt worry,they always do look like they have been cut - just like the leccy window/central locking wires on Defender doors that I seem to always be replacing......

is this procedure the same for an autobox as a friend of mine is having the same problem on his 2004 freelander. the HDC button is the one that's just behind the gear select stick ?.
