thought the ratio difference was so the front wheels would constantly pull the back end ..
helping in-line road stability .. at least that's how i remember blurb when the hippo first
hit the roads ..
before that .. i think it were a concept that one other manufacturer had tried .. but failed ..

No ones mentioned the fact that there isn't a centre differential at all hence the need for summat to allow speed differential between front and rear for cornering! It's such a basic requirement in a permanent 4x4 system that gear differences aren't really relevant!
Basically no diff or vcu = transmission wind up and broken things! :D

exellent point reminder :)

was a engineering shop on my street years ago ( since closed )
main job was repairing industrial gears
guy who owned it .. once tried to explain to me how vehicle differentials work
i understood at the time .. but these days am still at a loss to refigure it out ..
engines are no mystery .. but for some reason gearboxs 'n differentials i find confuzling

great stuff :)

.. luv those old black 'n whites ..
and now understand the diff. concept ..

mucho thanx for the link ..

Ahhh those were the days :D. Though I didn't realise it at the time, when I built one of these nut and bolt aged 12 I learned pretty much everything one need to know about how an automobile works:

Unusually, this nitro car had a reverse gear which was achieved using a really clever gearbox design. A real pioneer of RC car tech :).

i only asked about ird as at the time it was been built (freelander )lr bods told us it would have a slight difference in bias front back to give the car front wheel drive feel as that was the market the buyers would be used to , we did have a big discussion about wind up at the time seemed reasonable to me considering lr usually made equal 4wd though i should imagine cost played apart too, though personally i think a center diff and v/c like rr would have been better ,but fl has sold well and does work, and understanding v/c can save ird and diff issues along with servicing

I'm not sure if anyone here trulky knows the intentions of the design and why they did what they did :). It doesn't help that it's a clueless owner vulnerable system which is further not helped by LR assuming VCU's would last forever. But when it's working it works well, and that's what matters :).

they new about v/cs not lasting forever as it was the rr borgwarner we reconditioned for them that they came to see about ,nearly every return had a failed v/c persumably the higher mileage vehicles ,
