WOOHOOO

De der de der de der :):):)

Just as I thought. The pump wont engaged. Tiz now and gently burbling like a kitten.
Thank Jehovah for that. Obviously I’ll have to spend a few hours tuning it to remove the white smoke but I’ve finally got the rad and front panel back on.
A dollop of antifreeze tomorrow and bleed the brakes and He’ll be coming out in the sunshine for final tinkering.

I’d just like to thank you all for your support, especially Steve for his afternoon show on Radio 2 and Boris Johnson for popping round to squirt the easystart.

It’s the best feeling when it starts up and no strange noises well done:):)
There was a second or two of knocking that frightened me to death but that must have been the sniff.
It settled almost immediately when the diesel kicked in.
I must pop to the garage in the morning for a gallon of fuel. There can’t be much left in it after all that bleeding bleeding.

Fill it right up, prevents condensation. And they should be on winter diesel now.

I would also get some EcoMax or similar, and use that from time to time. Modern diesel isn't really slippery enough for old fuel pumps.
You don't need to use it all the time, it is so slippery it actually lubricates the pump for sometime after it is all gone from the tank.

I put a couple of litres of used veg oil in last week, thought it was better than binning it, will that help or hinder waxing
Probably won't make much difference, because the diesel you are diluting it with is now winter diesel, which has anti wax already in it.

Main problem I have seen on those with veg oil is that tiny bits of hard material can block the tiny hole in the banjo bolt on the fuel filter.

I filtered out the scraps :), I did mean to do a test and add some to clean glass of diesel and leave for a week to see what happens before I added to tank but didn’t

I’ve only got a gallon can
Ran the engine for a while today but it got very hot very quickly. I had bled the system so it kind of scared me the oil pressure was low. I have begun fixing the dash, indicator stalk and wiring to the fuse box but can’t be certain the oil light is working until finished so another day and I can be sure.
I don’t know if it’s possible but the oil pump shaft may also have been pushed down when ill fitting the fuel pump. It may not be pumping:eek:

OK. I forgot it wasn't on the road yet.

Does the oil light go off?

Nothing at all on the dash. For some reason when it was nicked they pulled all the wiring out. Strange as they didn’t hot wire it coz they couldn’t get past my custom dash. They chose to smash the ignition in the end.

Maybe try and rig up something temporary? The oil light on our Series goes out just spinning it on the starter.

Does the oil pump, shaft need to be aligned properly to allow oil, through , tdi does and same pump I think

It hasn’t got a master spline on the drive side so no. When I fitted the pump, the grub screw wasn’t properly engaged in the drive so it pushed down in towards the oil pump. If it’s somehow pushed the oil pump shaft down as well then it may not be engaged at that end.
Not the end of the world but I’d rather not take the sump off again to see what’s happened.
I’ll get the light working first to see if it goes out when turning over. I presume the sender switch in the filter housing is permanent earth and breaks the earth when pressure is applied. I could always stick a multimeter over it to see if it goes open circuit.

A day of electrics. :(
I think I’ve got everything back on the fuse box and everything looks like it’s working. Didn’t manage to test the pressure as the next job is a new steering wheel and working out why my brake lights come on with the side lights. It’s not a new problem but a familiar issue with the rear wiring shorting somewhere.
At least the dash is back on and the miles of wiring I have ‘adapted’ over the years is covered up.
Not sure how I’m going to sort the broken ignition barrel but I can drive it on a screwdriver for now. :(

tomorrow’s adventure continues with bleeding the brakes and testing this oil pressure. If I get that done I can drive it outside and tune the pump.

Right, I’ve give up.

can’t get the white smoke to stop and it’s blacking out the sun.

Dunt matter where the pump is turned so something else is out. The injectors are bang on, the pump was fine when I started and there is plenty of air with or without the butterfly.

The engine itself sounds as sweet as a nut. Ran it for an hour or so this morning while dicking about with the timing and the only time it missed a beat was when cracking the nuts on the injector pipes.

I’ve lost mi mojo with it now so it’s back behind the house and the camper trailer is back in the lockup. Looks like I’ll be booking it in somewhere if I can actually find anyone who will work on it. :(
