Hi all, just wondering whether if the alternator is knackered will this effect the starter motor. I put the two batteries on charge yesterday and today then went to start the landy earlier and nothin. Just a click when trying to start it. So I rocked the landy forwards and backwards in gear which freed up the starter motor, it then started.

I just hope i havn't bought a landy which is going to be a constant drain on the pocket? Are all landy's like this or just some? Mines done 213,000 miles so this is expected I know, but i've only had her a month and already forking out lots of cash. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Oh and also the fuel tank is leaking diesel aswell.

Cheers Terra Dog

all like it mate. good news is that once you replace it, it should last at least a year before doing it again!

i forked out around £500 in the first month but over the last 8mths maybe £50?
i had fuel tank, cam belt snapped, steering damper, uj's, tie ends, steering drop arm, starter, turbo etc etc
i think most bits are new now s should be ok for a bit :)

mines been trouble free so far(apart from a water pump last weekend) touch wood but mine has half your mileage:rolleyes:
thing always go wrong on any vehicle is just motering the good thing with landies is parts are cheap and easy to get hold of :D

I'm regretting buying one with such high mileage now.
i wouldnt worry mate milege is only number on a landy not a mojor concern(admitly everyone wants one with low mileage),get her fixed if i were you id buy a brand new starter and alternator costly but worth it in the long run:p

So your saying that if i get a reconned starter motor and alternator they will last only 12 months? I thought they lasted years?

it was a joke fortunately! once there done they should last fine if you buy fair quality. ie bosch. they sholdn't in theory need to be done again

mileage on landies means very little. its the way they have been treated and maintained thats important. mine was used as a weekend only competition toy so bushes etc were all worn out.

have faith!

my starter is 22 years old, and has 117k on it, and it's still fine, so don't worry too much :)

I did have to replace my alternator though :)

Cheers for all the confidence guys, it's appreciated. I'm going to get a reconned alternator for between £60 and £100. Then its just the starter motor and fuel tank. Hopefully. I don't think my landy has done much off roading from what the previous owner said to me, but who knows, i think it has been well looked after because its in good nick and i have hundreds of receipts with it, just looks like i'll be adding to the receipts collection.

Does anyone know what sort of paint/protector is best for painting my floor pan below the drivers footwells and on the floor pan where the battery sits??

cold galv spray tis good **** :D

Sorry i forgot to say, the floor pan and battery floor is already rusting, so just wanted to prevent it from going any further? Is galv spray good for already rusting metal? I was thinking of using red oxide paint which I used to use at work when intalling steel heating pipes?

Terra Dog, have you checked the brushes & regulator in the alternator? I replaced mine a couple of months ago, only cost me £14 and it's a simple enough job to do. I also stripped and rebuilt my starter motor after it began to stick a few times, not helped by wading! the solenoid gets full of gunk, I cleaned it all out and the starter motor itself and rebuilt it sealing it up with silicon at the same time, It's been fine since.

No I han'nt checked them, my dad and my uncle are going to be replacing it for me friday, my uncles an auto electrician so he should check it for me hopefully, it's between £60 and £100 for the new / reconned alernator depending on which one it is. I'm not very mechanically blessed. What type of landy do you have daz?
