Hi,

I've a 1987 land rover with the original 19J in and it doesn't seem as gutsy as I expected. Now I know I shouldn't be expecting much with the 19j still in there but it takes forever to build up speed and I often find my self having to change down as soon the road shows a slight incline.
Was towing about 2 tonne yesterday and it really really struggled, even had to put it in low range when pulling away....
It is also using a lot of fuel, like 25l gave me about 70 miles.
It seems to be belting out black smoke periodically, not just on acceleration
I had a few issues with timing after I did the belt but I thought I had sorted it.

So I was wondering if anyone has any ideas?
I am thinking maybe the timing is still slightly out if so, best way to fine tune this?
or i just need to tweak and tune another aspect..?
or, this kind of performance should be expected...

Any advice or thoughts greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Jasper

I got rid of my 19j cos I wanted to tow stuff, there were some hills it had trouble pulling itself up let alone with a 2 tonne trailer behind it:eek:

Mine used to get around 30 mpg which is better than my 300tdi engine is doing, I think the fact it goes faster means I drive it faster...

Don't expect great performance, 85hp isn't a lot to tow a heavy trailer. It is possible, if you keep the speed on at the bottom of hills you will get over, but if you get stopped at the bottom it can be embarrassing. :D
I would expect to use low range to pull away, especially on uphills. With practice you can get a nice smooth rolling change into high box.

Mileage, I get about 28-30 just driven gently on the road, a bit less working off road. Much less with a trailer, it would be less than 20 on a run, I should think.

About the smoke, just try the normal diesel things first. Oil and filter,Fuel filter, Air filter and check all hoses, set tappets.

Still no improvement you could try getting injectors checked and serviced. And check that the turbo seems to be working.

You can make minor adjustments to fuel pump timiing by rotating the pump.

To be honest, I reckon the fuel is probably down to my driving; fast is better right? I just get over 30 in my 1.2 Clio around town, so cant really expect anywhere near that in my landy.
I've just finished doing a nut and bolt rebuild so all he fluids, filters etc were changed.
What is the procedure for checking the tappets?
I think I will look into he timing adjustments, am I right in thinking that can be done without taking loads of stuff apart?

cheers for the replies.

there's got to be something seriously wrong as even a 2.286 109 series 11a that i owned several decades ago performed towing better than that , they were not rapid by any means, and about 25mpg , pulling over three ton didnt require low range to get moving .

It would be possible to pull away high range on all but the steepest hills. But it is much kinder to the clutch and other components to use low.:)

I have towed with standard 2a a lot, years ago. Not too bad, but certainly not a high speed experience! :D From memory a series is about 67 horse? So the power difference isn't huge.
We used to tow three tons and more with series as well, but most info now says they are now only rated for two tons?

Mine isn't.

Mine isn't either. Quite adequate for towing, I used to do it a lot, hills are a bit slow, but you can cruise at 56 mph on the flat, same as a cattle truck. ;)

Gotta admit, I like to tow with me Disco more than the 90, though!:D

boost diaphragm .

mines was like a new different vehicle after i changed it.

iirc atlantic diesel services were the company you need to speak to. You need to phone them

infact ... just googled boost diaphragm atlantic diesel services and found ...

That's because its not a part you should be changing your self, if you get it wrong it can have dire consequence's to the engine.

If it isn't leaking you don't have to replace it.

as can changing an oil filter wrongly.....

you say that only a dumbass would do that ....but my mate managed to sieze his engine changing his filter wrong :D

my diaphragm had a hole in and it wasnt leaking visibly ...but engine was down on power.
