im currently on my 4th alternator on me 2000 tdi 1 2nd hand and 3 new ones ,my last new alternator was an allmakes 4x4 100amp,and so is my current one.the last one is currently under warranty test which takes 8 weeks!!

the one i got now has done exactly the same again its fine for about 2/3 months then battery light comes on dim and guages are down to 12.4v which means the split charge wont operate.

i cant keep getting duff alternators surely?

any ideas or could it be summit in my electrickery system causing the problem?

i do do water n mud,but surely an alternator designed for a landrover would be up to the job?

only times i have had an issue with alternators is after mud, it just clogs the thing up.

after any mud stuff just get the hose under the bonnet and give it a bit of a hose down to get rid of the grime if you arent already, i did 2 alternators in 6 weeks, then aterted doing that and its all roses

failing that ****knows haha

yup - they dont like water and mud, unfortunately yu cant seal them, coz they need an airflow to keep em cool. Best to keep them out of water and mud .

i do hose off the enjin after every outing..
my mates disco 300 tdi he regulary goes deep wading, and a couple of months back his clutch went in the middle of the duck pond and the whole landy was left sub, merged but still runnin for 20 mins b4 we got him out,we spent 3 days removing all the dash and plastic stuff to get all the sandy silty **** out.but his enjins sweet as a nut and so is his alternator.at £90 a time it gets a tad expensive keep puttin new ones on.

but im still waiting for the outcome of the warranty test to see what they say

if it has a black plastic plug onto the alternator then replace it as they burn. have you pulled plug off and popped ti back on-if it is cured for a while=new plug kit

can you get sealed/oil cooled alternators for landys? I know other vehicles have them (a chap I know at work mentioned that his Daihatsu 4-trak has one).

if i remember theres 3 wires that connect to one bolt connector and theres a black squarish thing on the side whih has a single wire which just connects to the body of the alternator dunno if this is just a supressor of sorts? doesnt seem to be connected to the live side
