Hi all,
I have a problem with a freelander 1.8 Balmoral.....it wont start! When you turn the key all dash lights come on as normal but it wont start. It wont start with a jump either. Its my wifes motor and the same happened last week but after 10 mins or so it started no problem. I am working away all week (sods law) so any help would be good.

I think my dash lights came on even though the main fuse had blown.I think its a 70a attached to the battery cradle.Yours could need cleaning or it could be something completely different.
Mine is a 2l diesel.

Had this before on two cars. Turned out it wasn't a mystery electronic fault but a silly little piece of earth braid on the starter motor which worked away merrily for years before one day it wouldn't start unless you tried and tried then it gave out completely. It had been on its last legs (or strands) during its intermittent period. Took off the starter (one of the cars was a Mini so no room to work anyway) replaced the wire and works fine now. It may not be the same for the FL though, it's just an idea you can check out. Otherwise it could be the start of something in the immobiliser. I take it the car doesn't beep at you when you get in after unlocking off the fob.

Hi Hippolover, I checked with Her Indoors and she said that it did beep and a red light flashed on the dash for about 10 secs

Then it needs a new CR2032 battery in the fob. The beeping is a warning that the battery is failing. Once that happens - no power to deactivate the immobiliser. These batteries can be bought in Asda, Tesco etc and are £2 - £3 for a pair.

Forgot to say, there is a method in changing the battery. Carefully prise the two halves apart, slide out the battery, press either of the buttins for about 5 secs to get rid of any residual charge, slip the new one in positive side to the top as you look at it, reclip together then go to the car. Press the lock button 4 times rapidly and the red led will flash. That's it re-synched to the car. It may not need the re-synching but the Minis do with the same looking fob and I did a Freelander last week the same way and it worked.
