we are doing a long trip with a few land rovers running 300tdi's we were talking over spares to take we were thinking about a spare pas pump but then thought if we had a pas pump seize could we just fit a shorter belt and leave the pas off?
just a get us back home idea

the idea being carrying a spare shorter belt is it's light and swapping it at the side of the road is very easy whereas changing a pas pump is a bit more involved, and my steering without the pas connected is perfectly manageable

has anyone done it? can it be done? is there enough drive area on the crank pulley?
and if so whats the size of the belt that will fit?

cheers :)

whys that james? mines a series with a pas conversion when i 1st had it running i drove it without the pas pump and it was roughly the same as the old series steering

well the other vehicles are a disco and a range rover with 300's and factory boxes- will they be too hard to steer?
mine is really light with the pas you can easily turn it with 1 finger

yes the defenders and discos will be very hard to steer, possible in an emergency or to manoeuvre around a yard, what set up is yours

i think the best bet is to ensure the pas systems along with the rest of the vehicle is sound before you go,you couldnt possibly carry an answer to deal with every eventuality
