Hi all,
about 8000 miles ago i had the top end of my 1.8 rebuilt....brand new head / hydraulic lifters / valves etc etc.
Ever since then, and only very occassionally (approx 10% of the time) i appear to have 1 or possibly 2 tappets rattling. Sometimes when starting from cold / sometimes when hot. Sometimes the motor is completely quiet, and after a short time, they / it starts to rattle.
Its due an oil and filter change now, and i was wondering if anyone could recommend a flush / or an additive, or any other advice. Except burn it, please!!
thanks, Russ

flushing oil,
just follow the instructions and don't drive it with it in it.

They tend to sort themselves out, nice feature of DOHC, you never have to set them.

Who rebuilt the head?
Could be a blocked oil feed due to liberal amounts of sealant used on the cam carrier???

Wow 2 posts and no one has told you to burn it!

I don't think that there much difference between different flushing oils but it should do the trick, BTW if it always done it might be worth a call to the chaps that supplied it to see what they think.

Hope it goes well.

Hi
My advice for what it is worth is to contact the people that carried out the work before doing anything else. They could claim that whatever you do (flushing, replacing oil and filter or whatever) has cause the problem, and you will not really be able to prove otherwise. Get in touch with them and tell them what is happening and ask their advice (preferably in writing) to sort out the tappet noise.
Is the any warranty with the parts/work? I would have thought that 8000 miles should be well within any reasonable warranty claim.
Good luck and please come back and let us know the outcome.

Spoke to Redmans Engines today (nice guy, highly recommended). He suggested that a flushing oil should do the trick, if not contact them, and they will 'sort it'.
Have bought some 'Wynns' engine flush, been around since i was a kid, so i guess they are ok??
Will let you know the outcome.
cheers,
Russ

Update on this....did an oil and filter change a week ago. Used STP flushing oil beforehand.
Perfect. No more noisy tappet!!
Cheers all,
Russ
