Noisy relays

great, thanks for your advice, appreciate it!

The fact that it runs better on LPG would indicate that the emulators are ok from what you're saying, and its potentially injectors and/or air or gas leaks.. never a dull moment with a landy is there!

right, not had a chance to test the system yet but I took her for her first long drive today and was running LPG.

Above 40mph I noticed that the engine was juddering, a little like when a car back fires but nothing like as severe. At the end of the journey (75 miles) the petrol indicator light came on even though running on LPG. THe injector relay was clicking away for the whole journey.

Assume this gives more weight to the theory that the LPG circuitry is faulty? Opinions welcome! And merry christmas all.

I had a look on the bulkhead as you suggested, but I couldn't see anything that looked unusual. that said this is my first landy and i've only had it 4 weeks so still working out what everything in the engine bay does.

tried to find more out about LPG and understand there are 3 different types, with different methods of combining gas and air? Looking at the condition of the tanks etc, I would assume mine is an old single point injection. Would this have emulators?

may have most did ,but you can switch ecu off,at its simplest lpg is tank/s with solenoid on/off ,piped to vapouriser which is heated from cooling system as liquid lpg turning to gas uses energy and would freeze up without it ,to a ring on plenum where vacuum sucks gas into inlet manifold the amount of vacuum operates diaphragm in vapouriser to increase /decrease gas delivered, obviously petrol feed needs to be cut ,often done through emulators which sit in injector loom and cut power to injectors

so if the emulators are part of the injector circuit, the relay would still be activated by the ecu, it's just the signal would never reach the injectors?

One other issue is the consumption. I know its going to be heavy being a v8, but i seem to be burning half a litre of gas per mile. Does this sound unusally high?

yes ,but dont know if there fitted, how loud is noise as isnt normally audiable,id check injectors as must be fairly old by now ,poor spark also increases fuel consumption but is more noticeable on gas than petrol with good petrol system

Relay is reasonably loud, you can hear it from the rear passenger seats but its not deafening. Plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm and HT leads are all brand spanking new original parts. Will cekc injectors, seen them on craddocks or similar for £40 so not the end of the world even if all 8 required! No pub for a while though ;)

Not been able to test injector flow yet as still doing the xmas thing at inlaws. I did devise a different test though, which was to unplug the injector and fuel pump relays whilst engine running LPG with xurious results. The clicking noise continued, so im now thinking it may be the LPG switch/fuel guage unit. The jerking when travelling still continued as well, almost like a wheel being out of balance but felt like it was coming from the engine.

I wil still be testing the injectors anyway, but they dont seem to be the root cause. What should I check now for both the running problems and the clicking noise? Is it simple to turn off power to the lpg unit so can run petrol only and see what happens?
